Description The Rifle, Anti-Tank, .55in, Boys commonly known as the "Boys (or, often and incorrectly,"Boyes") Anti-tank Rifle" was a British anti-tank rifle. There were three main versions of the Boys, an early model (Mark I) which had a circular muzzle brake and T shaped bipod, a later model (Mk II) that had a square muzzle brake and a V shaped bipod, and a third model made for airborne forces with a 30-inch (762 mm) barrel and no muzzle brake. There were also different cartridges, with a later version offering better penetration.

Design and development
The eponymous creator of this firearm was Captain H C Boys (the Assistant Superintendent of Design) who was a member of the British Small Arms Committee and a designer at the Royal Small Arms Factory, Enfield. It was initially called Stanchion but was renamed after Captain Boys as a mark of respect when he died a few days before the rifle was approved for service in November 1937.

A bolt action rifle fed from a five-shot magazine, the weapon was large and heavy with a bipod at the front and a separate grip below the padded butt. In order to combat the recoil caused by the large 0.55 inch (13.9 mm) round, the barrel was mounted on a slide, and a shock absorber was fitted to the bipod along with a muzzle brake on the barrel. The Boys had been designed with numerous small narrow-slotted screws of soft steel set very tight into the body of the weapon, and its repair and maintenance proved a nightmare for British ordnance repair crews.[1]

The cartridge was an adaption of the Browning 0.5 inch, with a belt added firing a 47.6 gram bullet.

At its introduction, the weapon was effective on light armour (16 mm thick) at 100 yards (91 m). There were two main service loads used during the Second World War, the W Mark 1 (60 g AP at 747 m/s) and the W Mark 2 ammunition (47.6 g AP projectile at 884 m/s). The W Mark 1 could penetrate approximately 16 mm of armour at 100 yards, about the thickness used on the frontal armour of a half-track or armoured car, or the side or rear armour of a light tank. Later in the conflict, a more effective round was developed, the W Mark 2, which fired a tungsten-cored projectile at 945 m/s. The W Mark 2 was able to penetrate up to 3/4 inch (19 mm) of armour at 100 yards (~91 m), with the plate inclined at 70° from the horizontal (i.e. 20 degrees from the direct line angle of fire), the effective thickness being ~21.5 mm at 0°. Its effective range against unarmoured targets (e.g. infantry), was much further. Despite its recoil slide and cushioned buttpad, the felt recoil of the weapon (along with noise and muzzle blast) was terrific, frequently causing neck strains and bruised shoulders. Consequently, the Boys was almost never fired as a free weapon (i.e. not affixed to a support) except in emergencies.

Tell me, why a anti tank rifle? Those weapon was build to destroy tanks, an so were the aspects. It has a high recoil and a low accuracy. By the way, I´m sure the smoke of it would mark your possition. A sniper rifle often has the opposite aspects. Normal recoil (so you can shoot why you stand or run), a good accuracy and with a silencer you can hide your position.

spikerommel In reply to jinwylie [2009-09-29 21:47:55 +0000 UTC]

It does. they just don't make guns like they used to. It used to be all about power, and killing in one shot. Now it's about ergonomics, comfort, and emphasis on accuracy of the operator. NO FUN! NO FUN AT ALL! I want a gun I could simply take a limb off with and be done with it 'cuz he's going to die anyway. besides, that kind of stuff is awesome. *drools over the carnage created by "Hitler's Buzzsaw"*

Personal I like the M95 styer because the 8x56mmR cartridge.

Ballistic performance
Bullet weight/type Velocity Energy
206 gr (13.3 g) M30 701 m/s (2,300 ft/s) 2,737 J (2,019 ft·lbf)
200 gr (13 g) 200 Grain Jacketed 621 m/s (2,040 ft/s) 2,504 J (1,847 ft·lbf)

It's more powerful then the 8mm

The Barret is one of the few "modern" weapons that I like that isn't mounted in some sort of turret. firing only an 8x56mm, and damn, that's quite a bit of power.

I must really be under the weather for me to mix something up like that. That earns me a good old The Barret fires .50 cartridges, not 8mm.

You have a very nice collection of rifles there. I took one look and said, "Oh my god! is that an MK1??" My friend had the privilege to operate an Enfield 303 and handled it quite nicely. Is there much of a difference? I love weapons but personally I'm not allowed by my family to go anywhere near anything. Ever. (shh. don't tell them I watch people at the range. They're nazis like that.)

303brit is about the best bullet ever made because it's recoil, in other words kick like a mule and hits like a train.

I'm always partial to Wood grain, though. It looks more classy and less "mass produced" if you can take my meaning.

niiice I used to have an M16A1 "Vietnam" edition Tokyo Marui with the High capacity Magazine. but as it was very close to real size and weight, it became quite a burden. I took it upon myself to eliminate the foregrip and cut down the barrel to make it a submachine gun. It worked very well. Until the motor burned up. Five years of daily tournaments and over 500,000 shots fired... not bad for an airsoft gun. I bet I got a bit of a lemon, though, since Maruis last like, forever. Come to think of it, it was on discount.

A friend of mine the same model as you did but it only lasted three years,
What gets me is players bitching about the weight of the M14.

spikerommel In reply to jinwylie [2009-09-30 01:36:14 +0000 UTC]

Well if I played tournament, I wouldn't bitch quite as much. but I like the firepower produced by the heavier and more expensive airsoft guns. I had a gas powered Colt National Match and Beretta M92 which my ex-friend religiously abused. He also "took" my pair of expensive Gas powered Deagles in compensation for something he did which couldn't even be considered a favor, now both those are permanently broken. the National Match's cast metal hammer literally broke off, and he lost the trigger spring and pin to the M92. luckily my girlfriend loves paintball and airsoft and she'll have a relative fix the M92. The National match was my fave, though, and nothing will ever bring it back from the grave, so I made it into a prop of a Zeon officer's pistol!!! and Ironically the barrel of which is the foregrip from the M16A1!!!

If any of those toys had been real, he would have been six feet under and his family would have taken on the debt of repair/replacement. Oddly enough this kid has a DA account and doesn't even submit anything. maybe I'll just make my commissions for him public domain.

I think I'll post pics of all my surviving toys. I wish they were all real, though.

make them public domain? or post pics of my few surviving toys and props? I'd love to do both.

this kid's a fan. but, He's sexually twisted about women, and he prefers money and cars and anime over any woman, and is an all around b*tch.

So, I'm going to dig up all the many many pictures and 3D art I did for him and slap them on DA with a nice ol' watermark.
