Description
Young Mai and even younger Katsuya from a doujinshi project of mine that'll probably never happen
Left is the outline-draft thingie, right is the (sloppy) first color attempt. Maybe I'll do a nicer and more detailed one in time.
Mai is a bit taken aback by Katsuya being his usual awkwardly adorable self. Yes, I totally exploited their age difference for this.

I'm used to having to think my way around the problem of their 8-year age difference. I don't want to make it into something overly-romantic, because it's rife with potential for problems (even after they're both legal), but I will admit that it also holds a certain charm and potential for me (like this little scenario that won't go anywhere problematic).
Usually when there's an age difference, the guy is (much) older. The fact that it's the other way around here and that Mai, while clearly older than the other Yugi-tachi, operates on common ground with them is very intriguing to me, because it creates an interesting dynamic between them, not just romantically.

Younger Jounouchi crushing on Mai is actually really adorable! I don't think I've ever seen their age gap taken into consideration for fan art, so congrats on being possibly the first person to do so. :3

I thought it would be interesting to explore that point. The fact that he is younger than her is rather rare in any sort of pairing (usually, girls/women are paired up with older guys).

Yeah, I definitely agree with you. I often find myself shipping pairings with kind of an age gap, but it isn't very often that it gets portrayed as the male character being younger than the female character when it comes to heterosexual pairings in a lot of mainstream fiction.
