Thanks! Having been to europe, and worked in Germany, where the 'new' barn was built in the 1700's and the 'OLD' barn dated back to the 1400's; I realize that *any* construction in California can't be incredibly ancient...

It just looks that way!

That's a fascinating perspective. I feel like I'm looking through the eyes of a forest animal in the midst of some fantasy/realism novel.

^.^ Very pretty and untouched atmosphere. The title adds a lot of eerieness and intrigue, to the point where I'm starting to get a little unsettled as to what could be in that place...

Maybe I just watch too many scary movies. >.<

The tree branches framing the top of the picture also help center the eyes on the abandoned cellar. Lovely shot!

Thanks for the comments! The place is kind of spooky looking, and the trees are quite overgrown. The grounds haven't been maintained. Not visible in this picture is the farm-house to the right which is in the process of beginning to collapse...

The Barn collapsed about ten years ago, before I was able to get any good pictures of it. The equipment shed collapsed literally a few days before I took the pictures of the tractor outside...

No problem!

>.> I wonder how loud that collapse was. It'd have sucked to have been in the place when it happened...

It happened during a storm, I imagine it would have made some interesting sounds, with the wind blowing fiercely as the building settled onto the ground. As far as I know, no animals were injured in the collapse.

Neat-o! It reminds me of Hansel and Gretel's house for some reason though!

This is really really really pretty. I like the position that the root cellar's in.
Making it look like in between the trees and all. It's very nice.

It is an interesting subject. What I see though is flat. The colors have no vibrancy to them. I don't know if you could have gotten a little closer, but I think it would have helped. The dog adds visual interest, but the focus is too soft to really see him well. If it is possible to go back, I think that some early morning or late afternoon light would really help. Getting in closer so that the top of the photo isn't full of the mass of dead branches would also help. I would love to see a photo taken early morning in the rain or with mist rising off the grass. Because of the textures provided by the cut stone and the moss, some close work in BW would probably provide some awesome images.

Good insights! I too was thinking I should revisit and get some close up shots of the stone with the moss growing.

The dog, earlier featured in [Daisy on Hay Bale] was entirely fortuitous. I didn't even know she was in the shot!

It has a neat look to it. I like how the greenery is growing on the building. It slightly blends in with the area. Is that a dog?

Nope. Though I worry that I'll return to the are in 10 years to find it covered with suburbs.

Iecee In reply to jhawklyn [2006-03-01 17:33:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes it is the same everywhere, we moved from Holland because The Netherlands is just a concrete jungle these days. We bought a house in Germany near the forest but in these 6 years the forest moved about ten minutes further. It makes me want to scream!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jhawklyn In reply to Iecee [2006-03-01 18:21:52 +0000 UTC]

Yup. They've put in a golf course and several hectare of suburbs within a few miles of the ranch. A friend of mine that bought a 10 acre (approx 4 hectare) Almond Orchard in the San Joaquin valley is now virtually surrounded by suburbs...

This is awesome, seriously. It's the kind of place I would stay all day long in when I was a little kid, so of course a lot of nostalgia is coming from this photo.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jhawklyn In reply to Albino-Steve [2006-02-28 03:12:16 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The whole place has a very strong nostalgia effect for me personally. I worked nearby fresh out of high school while attending college. I knew the folks that were descendents of the original settlers, for whom the valley is named. It's been sad to see the place deteriorate. They had had an impressive classic barn on the property. It collapsed before I got a digital camera. I could have had some great shots of it with the windmill, 'cuz the barn was to the left of the windmill. The Root Cellar is to the right of the windmill, not far from the house. No one lives in that house now. I've got a handful of pictures in this series to go, and I'll start posting some more pictures from where I currently live.

so nice!
it's like you already framed the picture without actually putting a frame there, just letting the trees arc over the focus of the rootceller.

You know, you're right the photo, as cropped does look kind of spooky, from the trees. The cellar is actually in the open pretty much. I just used the trees to frame it, which adds the creepy feel.
