Description

The term Scythian refers to a large number of Indo-European, Iranic-speaking nomadic peoples whose territory stretched from modern-day Ukraine, all the way across Siberia and the Eurasian steppe to the Great Wall of China (not so great at that time). They were occasional allies and enemies of the also Iranic Persians. They imported Persian carpets, Chinese silks and Greek jewellery and military equipment, stablishing a precedent for the Silk Road. The domestication of the horse also began among the direct ancestors of the Scythians in the steppes, so they were skilled horsemen. And they were the origin of the Greek myths of the amazons (as Scythian women were also skilled warriors) and the centaurs, and the Abrahamic legend of Gog and Magog.

very good work, lots of interesting details. you mentioned that they were in the carpet trade, which reminded me that the world's oldest known surviving carpet is the Pazyryk Carpet (it is more of a rug, actually), found in a Scythian tomb. To me, its design suggests that it was also Scythian-made, and I can imagine this Chieftain sitting cross-legged on it of a quite evening. Β Β

JFoliveras In reply to Wingnut55 [2019-04-22 07:47:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's right. But there is a strong possibility that the carpet is Persian, the square pattern strongly resembles the patterns worn by the immortals in a glazed brick frieze from Susa. And the horsemen represented in the carpet are clearly wearing Persian caps.Β

in Turkey, scythians are considered as a Turkic people.

The description of the image says that the Scythians are Iranian (much like the Persians, Ossetians, and the Jasz people of Hungary)

πŸ‘: 2 ⏩: 0

JFoliveras In reply to ahmet-gonen [2019-03-14 14:50:25 +0000 UTC]

They were not Turkic, but many modernTurks (if not all) have more or less Scythian ancestry. Same as Slavs also have Scythian ancestry. Scythians didn't disappear, they simply were assimilated by other peoples, mainly Slavs and Turks, and modern Slavs and Turks are a mix. This is why many culturally Turkic countries in Asia have native people with both Caucasian and Mongoloid features.Β Β

Ah yeah, that's the one! My office is only a 10min walk from there. Was good to see some Scythian metal work. They had a full scale thorax which I imagine is very rare.Β

I envy you then. I visited the British a couple of years ago and I couldn't see half of it in a day. I would spend an entire week in that museum.Β

Great sense of light and great structure! I can see how well-researched this is just by looking at it. Any tips for someone trying to expand their visual library with historical clothing/armor/whatnot?

Thank you! I don't know, just doing a lot of research :/Β  Try looking for references on books (Osprey for example), archaeological finds in museums, and historical reenactment also provides some great reference

it may be. Golden scythian pectoral was found 80km from my city by the way. If you didn't heard about it there is an image in the article en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_P… . Maybe it will inspire you with some good ideas for further arts, really wonderful thingΒ

JFoliveras In reply to safeDeposit [2019-03-20 15:27:53 +0000 UTC]

Wow, great! This pectoral is so famous. I think it was made by some Greek artist for the Scythian market (note how different it is from the typical "animal style" Scythian art). The western Scythians liked Hellenic-style jewelry a lot.
