The Jian-27-0-1 is a twin-engine multirole fighter jet developed by Yongsheng Heavy Machinery Industries. First flew in early 1995 and commissioned in late 1997, it is a modernized derivative of the Jian-27-0, featuring a lighter but stronger airframe and upgraded avionics.
Using a mid-mounted swept wing with blended leading-edge root extensions (LERXs), the swept tailplanes and two vertical fins are mounted on booms outboard of the engines. Strong, lightweight material was used for the airframe, resulting in reduced weight, increased speed, higher service ceiling and greater rate of climb. The aircraft has an in-flight-refueling probe for extended range.
The Jian-27-0-1 uses a combination of low-observable technology and advanced electronic-warfare capabilities to increase survivability. Radar-absorbent material is used extensively while the aircraft's two Type 29-12 afterburning turbofan engines incorporate infrared and optical signature visibility reduction systems.
Onboard, the aircraft has a modernized cockpit and an upgraded electronic countermeasures package. The Jian-27-0-1 is equipped with the White Sword (Putonghua: 白剑), a powerful, integrated, multi-mode dual frequency band, passive electronically scanned array radar. With a search range of 385 km, the radar can track 15 air targets and engage 4 simultaneously.
