A gigantic step into manhood. Death, fear, suffrage; it all provokes a different perspective on life.
This picture has many emotions attached to it. It has many feelings. It is hard to explain, this gives you a feeling of war; but of course it's impossible to perceive it until you have experienced it.

thanks for the very deep and heartfelt comment, pal! really appreciate it. have you experienced war? would love to get your take on your first day in the battlefield, and if my painting portrays some of the emotions that ran through your mind at that point...

Oh, I have never experienced war. I mean, I want to fight in the war; it seems interesting. It's not because I'm just some excited immature teen who wants to shoot and kill a bunch of people. I don't know how to say it, I just always had an urge to experience war. I wanted to see things from those in WWI and WWII perspectives. I wanted to save a life.
I guess it is because there are so many things to do in war, not just killing people. It's exciting, thrilling, amazing, and scary. It's hard to imagine it, so I want to live through it.

well, if you're 18 or older, then enlist. the service needs people like you who are dedicated and really want to be there! even if you don't save a life or kill people, you're serving your country. there's no higher honor than that! cheers, pal, and thanks again for sounding in -- made my day!

You're quite welcome, I mean every word of it, too. He's got this look of disgust that just says "this isn't what I signed up for..." I reminds me a lot of Red Badge of Courage, actually. I actually think we should have stayed in Vietnam, but war is Hell, and always will be. He may have signed up for the guns, he may have signed up for the uniform, he may have signed up for the pay, he may have signed up for the adulation, he may have signed up for the glory, but he didn't sign up for the war.

wow -- thanks for the amazingly insightful comment. imagine how those who were drafted felt? i'd say take your comment and multiply the disgust & horror by 4.... really appreciate your take on my work. made me sit back and think about this for a while....

Nolo84 In reply to jevinart [2007-08-24 01:10:36 +0000 UTC]
You're quite welcome. Thank God for the (effective) repeal of the draft. We all still sign up for it when we turn 18, though. But I personally don't mind, because if it were a big enough war to be worth drafting again, I'd probably sign up anyway. But you really nailed the expressions. And I have to ask, did you model that guy's expression off of anyone? No detriment to the art, I would have. I'm talking about the focus character, for clarity.

i used actual archival vietnam war footage for my reference, as well as first hand accounts from a friend of mine who fought in combat there. it was his feedback, mostly, that made the most powerful impact to the piece i think... this was the most intense painting i've ever done, both emotionally and technique-wise. but well worth the effort, imho.

Can't say enough about the attention to detail here! It's so realistic and conveys such emotion that I simply couldn't look away from it. The frustration on that troops' face who's humping out that wounded soldier is felt deep in my bones... Thank you for sharing this. Godspeed brother.
