Description The beautiful city gate of Lübeck is quite an inspiration. I saw it live a few years ago, and it is still one of the coolest medieval structures I've seen so far.

Your drawing is absolutely amazing. I love how you put so much detail into each brick or stone on that castle. That picture is even small. Shorter than the pencil! I liked how you drew carefully and very small. I bet you used a microscope or something like that to get each detail in the drawing. I am very impressed that it took 3 hours to make. Usually, when I draw, it takes me about 2 hours to do, but those were figure drawings. Where is the fortress located? It reminded me of Scotland. There were so many buildings like that there. Have you ever done any drawing like that with colored pencils or pens? What would it look like if you decided to use those instead of a pencil? Ever thought of experimenting with those set of drawing tools? What parts of the building were hard to draw? Did you have to do a lot of erasing or you were very careful when drawing this? How many years have you been making drawings? It also reminds me of those illustrated buildings in classic children books or that Castle book. Those are my personal thoughts of this piece of work.

Thanks for the comment again! It feels like an interview haha!

This is one of the city gates in Lübeck, Germany. There used to be a whole fortress with a nice medieval fortress wall, however, most of it was destroyed. You can still see some remains, but for me the most majestic one is this gate. If you are ever near the city, I highly recommend a visit. The gate is also a museum, which as some cool things inside.

I've been drawing for many years, and usually stick with graphite pencils, but do draw with colour pencils and acrylics occasionally. I don't really post all I have, as they usually end up as presents somewhere.

Don't think there was much erasing involved, but I did use a ruler to carefully plan the location of each layer.

Hope you have a wonderful 2019!

This is an amazing illustration!

First of all I really like the placement on the paper and the way you photographed this drawing. It adds an extra dimension compared to a clean scan and extra charm. c:

I also absolutely love the theme. Medieval structures are awesome and this one looks very impressive. It’s nice how detailed and meticulously you captured the building on paper.

The only thing that bothers me is the ground. Compared to the detailed building it seems flat and fuzzy. The texture is more fitting for a cloud than for solid ground. You could make it more solid by perhaps adding some pavement titles or even some scribbles or shading.

The light source is also not very clear. Only the subtle shading on the roof seems to indicate that the sun is on the left. But this does not show in the rest of the drawing. And again it is mostly the ground where the shading bothers me. The tunnel seems to cast a shadow, while the rest of the building does not.

Aside from that I still think this is a great illustration! Some extra shading could just give it some additional dept.

I hope to see more like this!

Thank you so much for the detailed comment Akia! You are absolutely right with your points, and I will work on improving them for the next one, as I would like to keep this drawing to track progress

All the best for the new year!

Wow, thats impressive.

Hi! I'm from ProjectComment

First off, i love european medieval structures, and this is a fine example. As for your drawing itself, i particularly like the amount of detail (and on such a small size too). The windows have been done splendidly and the fact that you managed it without smudging is fantastic. The way you have shown the brick texture is also amazing. The side buildings have also been beautifully done.

However, just a few things:

The perspective: is this from the front or from a side? It appears to be from the front, and if so, we should not be able to see so much of the wall inside the gate (through the opening at the bottom)

The spire: The right spire (our pov) seems thicker than the other one, and lighter shaded too. Also, the protruding window is of different size and position in the two spires. I’d say, that the thinner spire looks better (one on the left from our point of view).

The background seems a bit sparse. Of course this may be intentional so as to not distract from the main bit, and this is also fine. Just thought i would point it out.

Finally, i would recommend (overall, not this drawing in specific) to not include the table in the shot. Its unnecessary. Include the pencil for perspective or whatever, but the table should be cropped out (imo)

Honestly, the ‘down’ points i pointed out arent all that noticeable, so wonderful drawing of an awesome looking structure.

Thank you so much for the detailed review!
I think you are right on all points there. I always have a difficult time taking pictures of the small-sized drawings, as I both want to show the details, but also the size. :/

Your drawing is absolutely amazing. I love how you put so much detail into each brick or stone on that castle. Is it a castle or an abbey? That picture is even small. Shorter than the pencil! Did you just draw it lightly? Did you need to do some smudging for the shadow and 3D effects? What is your strategy of making it for 3 hours?

Thank you so much! This is the front gate of the Lubeck fortress. It is a really cool place to visit if you are in the region. There is a museum inside the gate, and it has an amazing collection.

I think it didn't take as long to make, as it is not a very big picture. I used a ruler to outline everything and then filled in the sections. I do love making small pieces like this one!

It was one of those rare times when you sit down in a quiet room and only work. Doesn't happen as often as I would like though!
