Description Concept
I'm a big fan of greek and roman mythology, and so I wanted to do something from one of the myths that I enjoy. I also wanted to draw a tree. So the story of Daphne, who fled from Apollo and was turned into a tree. There are many variations on this myth, anything from she turned herself to a tree, she begged her father to turn her into a tree, and so on. But the end result is the same, it was apparently a permanent change and apollo then used the leaves from her tree to form a crown as an expression of eternal love to her.

Materials
This was done on crescent #100 illustration board, using a mixture of watercolors for the tree and background and colored pencils for her skin and hair.

Awards and display
I have not shown this piece publically beyond uploading it on my old deviantart account.

Prints
I have not made prints of this piece yet, however I do have the print files so will make them available once the move is done.

Original
Packed in storage!

Side Note
This piece is also uploaded in my gallery, but as I will not be updating that gallery and it will be a little while before I am able to start a new painting, I've moved it over here.

The tree has a tentakitty in it thanks to who looked it over in the wip and said IT NEEDS A TENTAKITTY.

I've always been a fan of Greek/Roman myth. And recently Norse & Egyptian as well. That being said, I love this one. I always felt bad for Daphne.

I've often wondered about that bit with the leaves. How'd Apollo know that removing them wouldn't cause her pain? Or did he simply not care?

EXACTLY! I mean she's still there, she's a tree.. what if it hurt her? What if he did it maliciously?

I believe he did. I think the story was meant to teach young maidens rejection of a horny male leads to an eternity of imprisonment. Otherwise, why don't these stories ever have the maiden turning back and returning to her family??

Ah, I just translated this from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Extremely creepy. All the description of Apollo chasing Daphne is extremely rapey (he smells her hair). I love what you did with this. The watercolor background creates a nice focus on Daphne's face and the details of the limbs. The pose is also great, since it gives a real sense of motion and not so much a "look at my beautiful womanly form turning into a tree" kind of pose.

JessicaMDouglas In reply to Zerinia [2012-09-06 10:01:24 +0000 UTC]

Isn't it? And it's always been expressed as rapey, even by the versions that try to have him be 'in love' with her. It's been crazy forceful and just... yeah not good. Anyway thank you my dear! I was really hoping that I got motion captured, I wanted it to be in midtransformation and not really a pretty/erotic sight. Well kind of pretty but not 'look at how pretty I am' as you said lol
