you have to go before you do, it's a city that doesn't exist.

very very true. did you go this year?

DeathofSilence In reply to JessicaDru [2007-09-09 16:47:31 +0000 UTC]
I did and it was amazing. It's a city with collective consciousness and instant karma, if that makes any sense. It's a place you have to see and expirience for yourself for it to make any sense.

Did you hear that someone tried to burn the man early?

No, I just heard about the suicide and that the BM licence is now in jeopardy! ugh.

Burning Man! I have to make it to that before I'm gone. Timing is never on my side for it though.

I really have no excuse, I live in Vegas. Sucks what happened to the Man this year though. Any word from friends if they got it repaired?

Something I've noticed offhand...the poi spinners I've seen (at Pennsic) only wear leather and metal (no cloth) while spinning fire...less chance of catching themselves on fire!
@BM, I don't think they bother with the leather and metal...

A lot of the burners i know wear fire proofed cloth if they wear cloth. But they definitely wear leather arm guards. I should have included that in my pic. >_< doh for not remembering!

In color, i want her to be a little singed.
I have a fellow who offered to teach me how to spin. but, there's some trouble with that, every time i try with non-flaming poi, i beat myself up! i totally whack my face and body every time.

Ghilemear In reply to JessicaDru [2007-08-25 21:27:39 +0000 UTC]
Singed would be awesome. I assume, then that the picture is slightly auto-biographical? Much as I understand the embarrasment of such, I have to say that it is an amusing picture of yourself that you paint. Mind you, I shouldn't talk, since I'm sure the same fate would befall me.
While I'm sure this will bore you to tears, I will tell you of a soewhat more gory accident that happened to a student at a clinic I attended. Read no further if you don't like blood.
We had just finished all of the live blade iaijutsu exercises at the end of the last day of the clinic. As we made our formal bows, one of the larger students bowed without securing his sword. As the sword slid out of the scabbard, the student made a grab for it, and the blade slit his hand from its heal to the tip of his thumb. The worst part was that this guy had been working with the sword for years, and was a black belt. Shortly after that, O-sensei ordered that no one below shodan (black belt) could work with a shinken.

oh snap, that sucks for everyone else, but JEEZ ... don't catch swords with your hands.

He's doing okay. He got stitches, and he recovered, and I saw him at the next seminar and he was fine. It was definitely a object lesson in safety, awareness and, strangely enough, philosophy.

*grins* the actual picture started out as a small 1-2inch thumbnail. i blew up the image and it turned out to be very nicely proportioned! perhaps i'll put that image in my scraps.

It's called Poi, the art of poi - it's fun and easy to learn. Practice with rope and tennis balls. Easy. fun. Add crazy music and go out and get you a job. Hehe. Seriously.

I'm familiar with poi ^_~ the few times i've practiced though have nearly ended in black eyes (and not just my own!)
but add music and it's fire dancing to me.
