Description Deep in the mountains of northern Provence lives a sorceress of immense power.  She appears, here and there always as a beautiful maiden, but how can that be when the old remember tales of her from their youth long ago?  One old gammer tells of a knight who went to bring her before the courts, to be tried for black magic.  Two days after he left thunder struck in the middle of a clear day and he was never seen since....

Well, that's how the story might go.  Here is a picture of Athena in a more medieval costume.  I've been interested in what the various gods might be doing in Christian times and I just have this notion of Athena being a bit like Gandalf, being involved in the first universities, helping artists develop anatomy and perspective, teaching martial arts masters their swords...maybe even getting involved to an extent in politics. Anyway, this picture is a jumping off point for an illustrated narrative poem a friend and I might be working on soon.  Any comments and critiques welcome!

Wow, I love this! The picture itself is awesome, and I also really like your ideas behind it. I think my favourite part of the picture is her legs, the way you've got the fabric blowing behind them. So cool! I also love the Medusa design on her dress. It's got that medieval Germanic/Celtic interlace but with the resonant classical imagery!

This would make a really cool topic for an illustrated poem! Are you interested in making her costume design historically accurate? If so you might be interested in a book called "Medieval Dress and Fashion" by Margaret Scott.

I also love all the swirling lines in the background! They really contribute to the feel that something supernatural is going on. Awesome illustration!

Thank you very, very much for the kind words, the Watch and the head's up on the book, I'm always striving for accuracy, the more accurate the real-life details, the more plausible and yet fantastic the fictional ones.  And yeah, the story's a neat one, though I've adjusted it to prose as my poet friend doesn't have time to work on it and I've always been more of a short story writer than a poet myself.  Assuming I have the time my goal is to get it done and self-published by Christmas of this year (of course I've got several other projects to work on in the mean time so that might be a bit optimistic, we'll see).

I love the detail in this, especially how you've done the sky! You have such smooth strokes and lines!

Thank you very much!  The line-work is something I'm always really mindful of and the sky was initially inspired by a pen and ink version Van Gogh did of his "Stary Night" painting but it morphed quite a bit as the drawing evolved and I ended up improving most of it as I went.

I hadn't seen Van Gogh's pen and ink version till now, its really lovely! I can see how it could have inspired your sky, and I like where you took it, with those long sweeping strokes

Oh yes, for the most part I prefer Van Gogh as a pen and ink artist as opposed to a painter...as heinous as that might sound to a lot of people.  But yeah, I had him in mind but then started to improvise and the picture came together.

I'm guessing she had like, a real big cloak on, and then she threw it off and yelled: "Goddess revealed." I somehow want to do this myself now.

jessehbechtold In reply to Thanathan [2014-04-18 15:10:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, well, more or less.  She probably wouldn't shout "Goddess Revealed", but being Athena she'd probably have a catch phrase or two she could conjure up.  Maybe an homage to Doctor Who and she shouts "Allons-Y!"    Anyway, we'll see.  I'm currently working this up into an illustrated short story.
