Description WB Marketing Art, Dorothy and Toto, THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Okay... This is the final art for a series of WOZ collector's plates.
The series was originally an assignment for renowned artist, DAVID EDWARD BYRD, but I was enlisted to assist him by rendering full pencil drawings which he then translated to color (mixed media), and provided backgrounds. So, this was a COLLABORATION.

I was deeply honored to work with David, whom I always referred to as The ByrdMan. He has a very laid-back way about him, much like a charmingly funny hippie.

Unfortunately, I only retained a copy of the pencil art I did for the Dorothy plate, for which I received a Daily Deviation notice recently:
jerome-k-moore.deviantart.com/…

You can compare the final with the preliminary I provided if you wish. I've long resisted posting this art at all, because the bulk of the work was done by another artist. However, I decided there was some educational value in exhibiting this as an example of how two professionals can effectively team up, and I've been continually reminded how much the kids here love to see things colored! LOL! So, here ya go, even if I didn't do it.

The discerning eye will be able to detect certain differences between my drawing and this one. These were editorial changes, but they're quite subtle. I cannot say that I agreed with the changes, but everyone here is entitled to their own subjective opinion.

Enjoy!

>w< These plates are beautiful! I will shortly be faving several of them, but I would like to site why:

1) The details are amazing. Dorothy's shoes actually look like they're glistening. The trees in the background of the Tin Man's plate--and even the Cowardly Lion's plate--have texture. Each stalk of corn in Scarecrow's is discernible. I'm thoroughly blown away.

2) The accuracy. Everyone looks like themselves. And finally...

3) The color. These burst with vibrancy completely befitting the MGM classic.

Nice work indeed. I also checked out the DD. Very nice work.

I also got a DD for my Wizard of Oz thesis. Being you so talented artist, I would like to invite you to see, if you are not too busy.

I'm an avid Wiz fan.. where can I get ahold of a set of the plates? Do you happen to know?

I certainly don't. But I could call up Mr. Byrd to find out if he knows. Plus, I imagine you could locate something online.

Wow. You're officially, like, my hero.
I plan to ask my grandma for them for my birthday. It's an odd request for an 18th.. but I can't pass up Wiz plates! >.<

Kudos to David! I agree.

But I think this scan of a photocopy probably doesn't do the original, or the actual plate justice. I bet the colors are even more vibrant, particularly the jades and greens of Emerald City. They're just not popping here.

photos do that...it's no fun, but it's still an amazing "demo" of the piece!

I swear man, there are people out there who can do likenesses just as well as you can but they just don't capture the life of the piece like you down. I bow to you, sir.

mimi-na [2008-04-30 16:08:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, your original drawing looks more like Judy. In the coloured version, her eyes and smile are different.

Is that a legality to get around the Garland estate for using her likeness?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jerome-K-Moore In reply to mimi-na [2008-04-30 18:46:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

The whole point of doing the project at all, and for specifically drafting me, was to nail down the actors' likenesses. There were no legal obstacles.

No, it was a "suit" decision, and I was told by the art director that he made the changes himself. He said that somebody higher up suggested that my Garland likeness was off, and he was obliged to fix it. C'est la vie.

Sometimes these things are political in nature, and those involved wish to more actively participate by putting a hand in, as if to say, "Yeah, I shared in making this. I was there."

mimi-na In reply to Jerome-K-Moore [2008-04-30 18:52:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh yay, because we all just LOVE it when a suit decides they should be making artistic decisions.

C'est la vie, indeed.

The final product is beautiful! everything looks amazing but Dorothy and Toto, especially. I like how Dorothy really looks like how she should look without being tied to Judy Garland's specific likeness.

Jerome-K-Moore In reply to ronsalas [2008-04-30 18:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Ronald.

But in doing a collector's edition series of plates, capturing a likeness is as important as capturing an essence or spirit. It's my opinion that anything less, on either level, is a failure.

ronsalas In reply to Jerome-K-Moore [2008-05-01 12:42:23 +0000 UTC]

That's cool. I wasn't saying that you didn't her likeness because she definitely looks like Judy Garland. However, what I meant was that instead of looking at a picture of Judy Garland playing the Dorothy character, you were successful in creating a picture of "Dorothy" herself. Does that make sense?

heh i thought this was for a plate=] I can't wait to see the pencils=] there's nothing wrong with posting work you've had a hand in, it's a piece of work that wouldn't be done without your touch, so do your thing and post if you want, it's on you.....
