where I grew up in bavaria......ladies and gentlemen would hang out their window and watch people walk by and even chat and when there were no people there would be their blankets and such hanging outΒ to air

I think perhaps in large cities.... the older parts of them where the windows actually open, and the buildings are close.Β Well at least in the movies!
