Vault 103 “Cyborgs”
Vault 103 was just another vault tec experiment, this one quite different then most of them. This Vaults experiment was to test the prolonged effects on a human when wearing power armor. The vault dwellers are to wear suits of Vault Tec power armor for most of their lives, only taking them off when reproducing and after death (in order for their bodies to be cremated in the vaults crematorium).
When the nukes dropped during the great war of 2077 a specially selected population was sheltered by the great armored door of Vault 103. An overseer was elected and he would guide his people into following the rules that Vault Tec had created for this safe haven and soon all of its adult dwellers would be protected by power armor and their children would wear environmental suits that would protect them from any harmful microbes that could have sneaked their way into the Vault. A special caste of maintenance workers was created in order to maintain and produce power armor, they would receive materials stored in the vaults warehouse and the Vault forge in order to manufacture new suits of powered armor.
Over the next few generations changes would slowly manifest within this Vaults society, gene pool and psychology:
- Slowly the Vault inhabitants’ immune systems were compromised to a point where stepping outside the vault without their suits meant death.
- Loss of taste sense due to terrible food created from their armor recycling bodily waste.
- Extensive eccentrism arised from the need for individuality demanded by the bland looks of the power armor, so modifications became common.
- When exploring the outside world the dwellers of 103 see the wasterlanders as weird and odd like insect larvae, they have better relations with factions that look like them (such as the enclave and the brotherhood of steel)
- The dwellers of 103 are somewhat emotionally stunted due to lack of facial expression being visible for them but they managed to develop an advanced hand sign language.
Encounters with outsiders mostly end with violence due to the dwellers being slightly inhuman with the way they act. Most wastelanders call them the “Vault Cyborgs'' due to this strange way of being.
One issue is that the cyborgs are often unaware of the strength of their power armor. Normal interactions with fellow vault dwellers require physical acknowledgement such as a pat or nudge. One notable event was Vault 103 attempting to set a trade deal with a local tribe, but when the Overseer went to pat the back of the tribal chieftain it broke his spine. The tribe rose up to defeat the cyborgs, but not wanting to harm them, the vault negotiators used non lethal weapons. While non lethal weapons for a vault full of power armor is a type of shock weapon that temporarily disables armor, it in turn fries an unprotected human. This unfortunate event has given the Vault Cyborgs a dangerous reputation.
Vault 103 is located near the tribal village of Peoria located halfway between Chicago and St. Louis, this location also puts it near Bunker Beta of the brotherhood of steel. Thanks to this location the dwellers of 103 encountered both BoS and tribals during their scouting missions. The BoS meetings were much more positive than the encounter with the Whachutu tribals; those often ended in violence which marked the people of 103 as demons in the eyes of the Whachutu’s. The Brotherhood of Steel hopes on eventually recruiting the vault dwellers into their ranks after a mutually beneficial deal is made with them, receiving power armor in return for giving prewar immunity boosters to Vault 103. The Whachutu tribe simply wants those demons to go away, they fear the cyborgs and now see the number “103” as the number of the devil himself. The Chicago Enclave has known about this Vault as they were monitoring the progress of the experiment for a very long time now, now that the vault has opened they hope that 103 can be integrated into the enclave for the rebuilding of America.
PL-08 “Prolonged Life” power armor (nicknamed the “plate” by the vault dwellers)
This vault tec brand power armor focuses on the attempt at prolonged life support inside an environmentally sealed suit. While this suit isn't as well armored as other power armors, it has excellent medical systems. It has advanced oxygen scrubbers, waste recycling, and a variety of stims and drugs. The onboard computer is capable of repairing injuries. This has made the Vault cyborgs very tough opponents. Due to the nature of the Vault 103 experiment the vault residents became very attached to their power armor, and will customize their suits as both a sign of expression as well as for specializing for their jobs in the vault. One common expressive customization is sculpted pectorals or breasts, making it easier for social interaction between the sexes. Power armor technicians have additional robot assisted arms that make for easier suit repair, and the Vault Security have more armoring.
The common security weapon inside the vault was a heavy shock knuckle. This weapon can stun a power armor for a short period of time (when used against organics it has a tendency to incinerate them with its high voltage). For lethal weapons the law enforcement of the vault were issued a type of rapid fire bullpup coil gun.
-Artist notes-
When i was thinking about fallout recently i started to wonder if there was any other faction not the enclave or the brotherhood of steel who used mostly power armor? Not realy. I got to thinking of logically who might have the knowledge and tech to have power armor and the answer is all our favorite evil experiment faction, vault tec,
If this were to be featured in a game it would make for an interesting starting point for a player. You are raised in the vault and get your armor and are part of the 1st dwellers to leave the vault. Your character would automatically get the skill to use power armor, while you have a lower charisma with non power armor clad humans (to show how the vault cyborgs have difficulty being empathetic to anyone that doesn't look like them). As you play the game you can customize your power armor to a much more fine detail in stats and gear and cosmetics. The whole selling point of this rpg would be the aspect of being essentially a type of cyborg character
Also i was trying out a color option in my art program, it added the shading (i still did all the basic colors myself). Its a little all over the place, but still adds that small bit of depth. Let me know how you guys think it looks.

Vault Tec’s experiment to test the effects of prolonged power armor usage has created very durable and skilled mechanical humans but at the cost of having to stay inside their armor due to compromised immune systems.
PL-08 “Prolonged Life” power armor
(nicknamed the “plate” by the vault dwellers)
This Vault-Tec brand Power Armor is highly customizable. The average PL-08 lacks the same armor of other power armors but has advanced life support that can keep the wearer free of toxins and radiation and can slowly repair any injuries.
