I heard somewhere that Disney intentionally marketed it poorly.

It was successful to me. I didn't know it was actually a box office flop.

I was the only person in my whole high school that saw it in the theater. I told everyone about how awesome it was and they all look at me like, "O.o Huh??????? Treasure Planet? Never heard of it."
Same thing when I was in college. An art college for that matter. My animation class, the professor asked me what's you favorite Disney film.
"Treasure Planet"
The professor smiles, but I look around me and everyone's like, ". . . . . .Huh?. . . . . . . ."
I mean seriously?

This film was terribly underrate but look at what it was competing with at the time....Was it Lord of the Rings? or Harry Potter? Either way, as great as this film was, it never stood a chance against the likes of those blockbusters.

It's something new and really good; so of course it had to be a "flop" to them.

Every Treasure Planet fan like myself should be ashamed for even acknowledging that it didn't do well. WHY! I loved this film like there was no tomorrow when I heard about it.
The animation was good it's was kinda like Titan AE graphics.
The music was good yes it lacked musical numbers but you gotta give James Newton Howard credit.
The characters were good they remind me of what's put on Star Wars and Star Trek and Jim Hawkins development was no contest.
The plot was good similar to Treasure Island but less boring and more intense. Treasure Planet is my semi-favorite animated movie EVER.
Totally better than Frozen, it even got its release date taken.

I knew it had something to do with the advertising! This is my absolute favorite movie of all time; I have NEVER been able to say that about a movie before. Also, considering I remembered watching it from back when I was a kid, say, about a decade later... That's saying something. If I remembered liking it that much as a kid that I felt compelled to watch it again... That's REALLY saying something! [So far, I've watched it five times - yes, I counted - in the past month and now own the DVD. XD]

The majority of Frozen's advertising was based off Olaf. The teaser made everyone (well, I guess not everyone, but the majority) think that it was about an adventure of a snowman and a reindeer. I mean, I love the movie, and I love Olaf too, but c'mon.

Not really. That was just the teaser in the theater, but it did not make up the majority of the campaign. Dinsey went old school with their campaign. First, they showed a cutsie, funny teaser / short targeted towards children--Olaf. This make kids giggle, and their parents curious, but left it there. Then, they held the campaign by not advertising it forever in advance (most movie savvy adults realize that movies promoted too far in advance are often box office bombs because they're trying to gain attention in advance). Then, they advertised 2 different style campaigns.
1 was targeted towards children and came on at the same time as kids were awake and watching TV. These were made to show all the funny and exciting scenes and get the kids excited.
The second was for adults. It was meant to show the "feels" of the movie. These commercials came on later at night, after kids would primarily be in bed, or when on adult channels (like when the News is airing or something), and they would show the more profound scenes, the imagery of the set, etc. In addition, for adults, they allowed the music video "Let it Go" to play as a whole in advance, showing a deep emotion adults can understand more than children since kids are so young--the feeling of being trapped and the desire to say "forget, I'm just letting it all go!"
For "Treasure Planet" and "Princess in the Frog," they did not advertise to children hardly at all, but rather to adults. Also, Treasure Planet had internal issues in develeopment (it was the center of an internal Disney grudge match. For this reason, it was originally rejected when it was first proposed in the early 90s). For Princess and the Frog, Disney was trying to make a political point that 1) girls didn't want to be princesses anymore and 2) no one likes 2D animation anymore. Princess and the Frog was the nail in the coffin for 2D animated movies, and Disney was very happy to let it's 2D animation department go. Plus, Disney also made a dangerous move by selling as "the first black princess" and stating that "we noticed that there were no black princesses, so we made one." It's not a good selling point because no one said "we need a Chinese princess" or "a Native American" or "an Arabian Princess." These movies were inspired by something, and that gave them heart. While Princess and the Frog was a great movie, they stirred up a lot of doubt, and kids (who knew next to nothing about the movie) chose to see Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Chipettes (came out the same year at the same time) since that movie had advertised to kids and was building off a successful movie franchise that (also) held nostalgic importance to their parents.
Poor. Advertising.
(lol, sorry if there are grammar errors in this. I just jotted it down quickly on my way out the door, so I didn't proof read it )

I took an art class in high school and wanted to do some screen print Inigo Montoya shirts saying his favorite line because my English teacher has all her senior classes watch the movie at the end of the year and we were gonna wear those shirts while watching. The art teacher didn't want me to do it because it was "too close to death" while he let his other students paint grim reapers, skulls, corpses and whatnot! The English teacher and I both tried to explain to him the meaning and I even gave him my copy to watch, which he held for a week or so and never did! He threatened to give me a failing grade on the silk screen project if I continued. I made over half a dozen shirts for me, the teacher, and my family which we still wear.

Nice! Some people think death is horrible even though it can have a meaning and some people don't understand that. Teachers aren't allowing many things anymore :/ It's stupid.

Yes death has meaning but some people are too shallow to look at the context, sometimes death can be merciful especially if horrendous suffering is happening, but that's a rare case. I digress. Here's some more school stupidity for ya: I just saw a video about this kid accidentally bringing his hunting knife to a football game, leaving it with the security guys, and then getting smacked with a 10 day suspension, which permanently goes on his record, and possible expulsion! Talk about no good deed going unpunished. And it's not just teachers being blockheads about things; this one library lady got canned for sticking up for this kid who won this reading contest five years straight, because they wanted him not to participate anymore. If I had a nickel for how dumb people can be I wouldn't have to work, like ever!

Definitely true about death. You have to die. I really hate the saying but you only live once is true.
Wow, that's so dumb. The kid was just really smart! And so what? Yeah maybe he should have given the other kids a small chance but that shouldn't make you go against the kid... God, some people.

In my opinion, this movie flopping is BOLDERDASH! BOLDERDASH I SAY!
Why did you have to release a wonderful movie when such monstrous titans were scouring the terrain for nourishment, Disney?!
All those movies could very well could be compared to a open fruit market. Here you have your apples and your oranges, fruits that everyone has heard of and is used to and they are all quite delicious! And then you have you're new, unique fruit, so crisp, so juicy, so fresh, so ripe without being mushy and so delicious! But no one heard of this fruit, so they don't buy it, but they buy everything else, letting this new, unique fruit rot in the sun... And so much so, that this new fruit gets discontinued, never to be seen again publicly unless you have an ample store of its seeds.
I thank God I have this movie on DVD... Jim, you and everyone else in this movie I love... Even Scroop... (Well... I actually loved watching him die...). I salute every last one of you, and you, the guy who makes this motivational posters, for paying your respects to this great movie. This great movie, so mercilessly cheated out of it's righteous place in a mountain of box office money...

Another thing, I don't remember this being publicized at all. People scram to get tickets when it's made by Disney, Pixar, or those other big companies. I'm sure it would've done a lot better if it was properly publicized. What were the other movies were out at the time?
