Description I'm getting sick of all the pieces I have in my WIP folder, so some of them are getting posted as-is, rather than how I might have initially planned them.

I'm really interested to see what Disney does with this story. I actually always hated it as a little girl because I thought the princess was the biggest bitch, and didn't deserve to get to marry a prince. FYI for those not into fairy tales - in the older versions of the story he is transformed not by a kiss, but when she throws him against a wall in disgust.

I had to look him up, so not directly - but it looks like his art was strongly influenced by the PreRaphaelite movement which DEFINITELY influenced my style.

I am so glad you liked him. He was very imaginative, and his manner of illustrating fairy tales and nursery rhymes was very influential.

I love your interpretation of the spoiled princess! I was so glad to find this art--too many Disney versions on dA. The little frog is so cute!

haha, thanks! I love disney, but sometimes it does get a little frustrating how heavily that style influences fairytale art here on DA. There is so much open to interpretation and creativity that its kind of a shame people don't have more fun with it.

Which is why I will be doing several feature journals with art influenced by the original tales. It will be a Disney free zone!

Come to think of it, I can't remember reading any version where her kiss helped him. It was always when she threw him against the wall. This is lovely though, I can't express to you how brilliant this picture is

hmmm, maybe I had a really updated/PC-ified/anti-violence version... I like the original better

The princess was extremely young in the original, and physical violence was a well-known way of breaking a shape-shifting spell back then. Kissing him wouldn't have made any sense to the original audience. I think the idea is the prince is deliberately antagonising her so she'll try to hurt him, thereby breaking the spell. In some versions he changes back when she tries to behead him!

I like the amount of detail you've put in the line work, like the ties and stitches on her dress and shoes.

Maybe the prince knew she was unhappy, and that she needed him to gladden her life, even if she did not know it at first.

one of the other original versions, he asks her to chop off his head and she does. you should check out another version- the well at the end of the world- it's more like Cinderella.

Fantastic job love, I wish I had something more constructive and helpful to say but I'm afraid the words have been taken from the beauty of this.

Nice! I love the princess' pose!
Yes, in the real fairytale the princess doesn't kiss the prince frog
I hate the princess in the old fairytale: I'm agree with you!

HolyMaiden [2010-12-31 00:29:21 +0000 UTC]

Tiana had her own faults, but thankfully she wasn't like the princess, despite that they shared a strong disliking of frogs.

janey-jane In reply to HolyMaiden [2011-01-03 14:23:07 +0000 UTC]

amen right?! I loved the movie, I thought it was one of disney's stronger showings of all their princess movies

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HolyMaiden In reply to janey-jane [2011-01-04 00:01:01 +0000 UTC]

I think the strongest of the princess (in terms of presonality) are Belle, Tiana, Jasmine, and Rapunzel.
Ariel, shes ok, but her 'love at first sight' romance isn't realistic because it's very rare for that to end up in marraige, and she went as far as to get ursula to help her.
Cinderella, she's possibly one of the best, but I would have high tailed it out of that house and away from that family, even if I would risk being homeless.
They all have their faults though, thankfully, and we have to remember their stories, otherwise we see them as just a franchise for disney, and not who they really are.

I love this! Especially the little detail of her golden ball by her leg

I have a vague memory of a decidely 80/90's live action film of the golden ball version....wish I remembered it properly. All I can remember really is the golden ball and that the frog was a guy in make-up (6ft tall etc.) lol

Anywho Gorgeous. Especially the details and her expression

Yeah, old versions of fairy tales are sometimes reeeally weird
I also remember thinking the princess was really ungrateful/selfish in the kiss-the-frog version.

Have you ever read Juliet Marillier's Wildwood Dancing? It's one of my favorites, and it's a totally different take on "The Frog Prince."

Also, here's a hilarious version of that famous magical kiss: [link]

Then again, in the older versions that I've read the frog also acts all creepy and when she undresses to go to bed he indicates that she should have sex with him, and crawls in next to her when she disagrees...

This has such an awesome genuinely old storybook feel. And I DIDN'T KNOW THAT! That ppor frog. Just saved a frog/toad in my backyard today. Poor guy was scared to DEATH.

And back to the art, this is really something else. I love the historical look of her outfit. Super awesome work.
