Description Not the best photograph ever - it was raining and dark indoors, I have no special lights so this is as good as I could get with the normal lights and flash.

Linen shirt in 18th C style, no shoulder yoke, geometric cut and lots of gathers to control the fullness. The neck should be fastened with a neck stock or cravat but I haven't made any yet. So my invisible model wears it open like Cap'n Jack in pirates of the carribean. The cuffs are closed with shirt buttons. Two buttons linked with a piece of wire, not actually called cufflinks but the forerunner of this nifty device.

Umm, I'm not very used to seaming, so my question will probably sound stupid. But is linen a lightweight fabric? I've done a shirt similar to this one but I used cotton crepe (I think that's the name) and it is really lightweight but a little expensive Thank you!

Why, why aren't men wearing those shirts anymore? It's a pity.. and yours is really well done!

I know it's a rhetorical question but it's because the fashion industry can make a more fitted shirt using less fabric that costs less and needs less maintenance. It's all our fault, we want cheap clothes that are easy to care for.
Historically shirts were underwear not outerwear, they were worn to protect clothes from the dirt, sweat and grease from our bodies as they can easily be laundered. Clothes from this period of time were extremely difficult to clean, they were not laundered and there were no dry cleaners...
Still it's a shame 'cause these are lovely comfy shirts and really sexy!
... and thanks

All men within a certain level of hotness should be absolutely REQUIRED to wear this shirt every day, no exeptions, under law

Awesome shirt C:

Devilishly - there is a coat as well but no photo's of that yet, I have some trim to finish off

I even sold some 18th C stuff to a girl who fancied him and gave him her email address!

Thank you - I think the weight of the linen helps, it's a very fine lawn and lends itself perfectly to the gathers and fullness without being stiff and bulky.

if only the handsome men wore shirts like those today they`d be comfy to steal from them to sleep in

I like sleeping in my period underwear - the shifts and chemises are so comfy and there's nothing to beat the feeling of linen or cotton I don't sleep in corsets though...

This shirt just seems to whisper (not scream because it's too cool for that) "I'm devilishly handsome and will flatter you endlessly... up until tomorrow morning." How fun.

looking good!

have you done any type of reenforcement at the bottom of the neck slit such at a bar tack? This style shirt has a tendency to rip there...

I've done what I do on my 15th C shirts that have a very similar cut and have the same issue. I've sewn a buttonhole stitch round the last 3/4" of the opening - I've found that is usually enough to stop tearing - unless ladies rip the shirts off in the throws of passion

'Damn straight it's comfy - it's a baggy shirt - it dunt feel like yer wearin' out' I quote my invisible model (that's a
Yorkshire accent if you've never heard it before!)

Thanks

haha yeah. I know how those are, all the shirts I've made so far have been really baggy renaissance-like types
