Description
Another sketch of a sailing ship, this time it is and English "great ship" from the times of the Tudor dynasty (mid-XVth century). England had probably three such ships (all of them were flagships), which were somehow a link between a reliable but obsolete medieval carrack and the newborn galleon.Drawn in about 6 hours during boring lessons. I used HB and 2B pencils on A4 paper.

I'm trying to design a ship based from these kinds of ships, but it's sooooooooooooo hard for me. You make it look easy.

The Flagship at the time was the 'Mary rose', shw was of the Great Ship class.

absolutely fantastic. It looks like the Mary Rose. the design revolutionalized naval combat in the tudor era. but her greatest advantage, the huge cannons that laid just above the waterline, prooved to be her greatest downfall when a swell came up and flooded the lower decks draging her and her entire crew to the bottom of the ocean while Henry 8th watched from land.

They made a ship like that, I think called the "Royal Rose" that was so topheavy it literally capsized in the mouth of the harbor.

every "rope" there is a detail for me, and it would be hardcore for me to draw something like that and don't lose coordination in picture.
this picture is very detailed for me, cause I must compare it with my skills.
Yes, there is a lot of artists, who can put this picture in their trash bins, but as I said mate

I'm curious, did the ships really have that much of a bend in them? were they really arched like that? Particularly from this angle it look very dramatic.

Rather not, but many contemporary paintings or drawings show such deformed vessels, so it's possible that some of them actually did look like that. However, I think I somewhat exaggerated the bend on this one (the main reference: [link] )
