I'm told GIMP got a lot more intuitive of late.
Is that true?

That's very true, it's finally gotten a one-window mode, but if you want, you can revert to floating mode. In terms of painting abilities it's about on the level of Photoshop, though the result - as usual - depends solely on the artist's abilities.

Does it still suffer from MENUSMENUSMENUSMENUS?

What menus? When you want to rescale or rotate an element or layer? There some left, but I always found it very useful. It made some actions more clear and easier to manage. GIMP on the whole looks much more like Photoshop now, with all the customizable docks, windows, tabs etc. etc.

Last time I used it was 2008 or 2009, so I might have a look at it again.
