Description I hate horizontally oriented canvases.

Ambrose Maddison is my character.  He's a Civil War soldier, idk how obvious that is.

Well done here, I like the fierce determination you could see in his eyes and expression. The colors/lighting is good too is provides a gloomy, yet brave appearance to the pic

I'm not familiar with your OC, but I must say I really love the way you created what surrounds him, the blurry soldiers on the back, the soft rain falling I also find interesting the look on his face, he looks a bit determined and I think your style is really nice!

Hey, I was wondering whatever happened to you.

I'll certainly add Mr. Chamberlain to my reference folder!

Business school happened, bwaha. I graduate this December, so homework's been hitting me hard.

But I always get a jump of excitement when I see your awesome history art. Still a history buff at heart, wherever I go.

I feel that. -_-'

I'm glad to hear that!  History never gets old! (lololololol)

Looks Civil War-like to me!  I really like the colors.

Go get 'em, Ambrose!  Make it out alive...!

Thanks, I'm glad.

Hopefully he can make it through!  At least smaller targets are harder to hit. oWo

I love the lighting, it really sets the mood. I also like the way you made the rain, it looks very nice and realistic with the light coming from that direction. Good job on the character expression and pose too!

And as the war raged on, the faces just kept getting younger and younger. (also seconding that lighting effect!)

When it comes to horizontal canvases I think the worst you can do is 4:3, but once you get closer to ratios like 1.85:1 (HDTV) and 2.35:1 (modern movie letterbox), it opens up the opportunity to make a strong statement.

So tragically true.  But amazingly, Ambrose is a whopping seventeen years old.  But he has a very soft and effeminate peach-fuzz look, which makes him appear more like twelve.

Ah, the plight of horizontal canvases...funny how even image orientation plays a role in conveying messages!

Haha, aww... (yeah, with soldiers like Ambrose around, there were always stories of teens who lied about their age- as well as lie about their gender- in order to enlist) ...ahah, this is the kind of character archetype I didn't even know I'd like so much until sweet-suzume wrote one for her war novel. XD

I should think the image orientation matters. Just like how a musician decides how long a song should last or how many stanzas a poem contains, these decisions affect the overall outcome.

Absolutely...you had soldiers like Lizzie Compton and Marry Galloway...fourteen and sixteen years old respectively, who passed as young men in order to become soldiers and fight in the ranks.  Then of course there were intervals wherein recruiters were so desperate for manpower that they looked in the other direction whenever they got somebody underage--sometimes as young as eight to eleven years old--to put on a uniform.  Crazy!

I like the light in this a lot! Especially how you used cold shadows contrasted with warm yellow light ^^
Nice work! ^0^

Thank you so much! I'm glad you picked up on the colors, that was one of the main focuses of this drawing.

I appreciate your commenting.
