It's a Short Tucano. It's a two seat trainer for fast jet pilots. Based on a Brazilian (Embraer, I think)counter-insurgency fighter, but built in Britain. The camouflage paint job and the aircraft's number are based on what the squadron was using in 1940.

So It was a fighter in the 40s and was converted into a trainer?

no, Tucano is a fairly modern brazilian aicraft, less than 20 years on service.

Sorry, what I meant was the markings and number were originally given to a Spitfire assigned to 72 squadron (which is now operating the Tucano) and are being used on the modern display aircraft (I think 2 other squadrons are doing this as well). The Tucano is a 1980s design.

QJ was the squadron code for 92 Squadron. 72 Squadron had RN

Didn't realise that. This Tucano is from 72 Squadron, according to the airshow program, so I just assumed the markings were 72 Squadron too. Cheers
