Thank you for your interesting thoughts! Happy that my painting can make you think about humanity's inner darkness.
When I painted this, it was mostly just to have fun with a dark cave, a couple of tentacle monsters and of course as a tribute to the great universe of H.P. Lovecraft (where a person's inner darkness mostly just makes you go insane and get locked up in an asylum) ;0)

Wow. First off, I've got to say that this is an incredible scene and the texture of the tentacles(?) and walls are amazing. I love the complimentary color tints used with the difference of lights. It really helps to push this image in a more natural way. The pathway helps bring the viewer to the characters without much resistance.
However, I feel this could be pushed even further with the help of contrast. Right now the lantern feels like it is lighting up the entire cave while the entrance only lights up the first segment before it hits the wall. If that is what you were going for, then awesome! But if the lantern light was a bit limited, the darkness could be extended to the walls of the cave behind the character and the far wall. By doing so, it will help make the characters stand out even more as well as the tentacle(?) that is the closest to them. I think it may help bring drama to that aspect of the piece.
But that's just my opinion, nonetheless, this looks great e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thank you very much for the nice review. I agree with you that the drama could be increased by reducing the light length of the lantern, so I made a quick paint over. (Hurray for multiplay and soft light layers!)
It also turns out my main monitor shows the image quite darker compared to other screens I have since seen the image on, so that made the painting too bright on everything except my own monitor. Maybe it is about time that my old monitor should be retired!
Thanks again for your good idea :0)

This automatically brings to mind the old game "Pitfall". If it was set on an alien planet...

I am only familiar with the most basic version which was one of the first popular computer games. The darkness at the edges of your composition lend to that feeling of being trapped on the path. In the game when reaching for a vine you would discover you had grabbed a snake - game over! In your painting I'm imagining the hero's surprise as he grabs a tentacle!

Thank you very much for explaining. I really like the expression "trapped on the path", maybe I should name another painting like that sometime :0)
