Description Just saw this up on Amazon, so I figured it must be okay for me to share it now. This is the cover for the latest upcoming novel in James Lovegrove's bestselling Pantheon series, "Age of Shiva." It's my second foray into this series after the "Age of Godpunk" novel and it was great fun to work on and research. Due out from Solaris Books in April of 2014!

I really love th attention to detail. I remember when I first picked up the book that I saw the giant and essentially went into artist mode. "This piece is out of proportion, that doesn't look right, blah. blah blah". But now that I'm about halfway through the novel, I have to say that your characterization of a "giant dwarf" was spot on. I also love how close each of their costumes actually mirrors their in book description, and as such, incredible job.

Thank you very much. Yeah that giant dwarf was definitely a bizarre thing to wrap my head around because it does look so odd to see haha. As for the costumes, it may actually be the other way around as the cover image was finished before the manuscript. So Mr. Lovegrove was probably actually taking cues from the artwork as to what the costumes would look like.

Wow, that is really interesting. I hope to work both sides of the gambit someday, but from what I've heard from publishers in my area (namely milkweed and greywolf), the process has gone in reverse. Usually the manuscript is completely keyed up, or in one of its final drafts before an artist is ever even considered. How did you get involved with this project in particular, if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah I think it depends on the publisher. Most of the covers I've done with Solaris Books were created before the manuscript was completed. I had done a few covers for them before this one and I guess they just thought my style was a good fit to continue the series after Marek Okon's run with the series. So they contacted me about it and I naturally said, "hell yes!"

I wouldn't have hesitated either! Is there any future work you are going to be doing with Solaris? I know the Pantheon series is over, of course, but there are always more books.

Thanks! If I remember correctly, the reason some of the others aren't in the piece is because of their characterizations in this particular book. Some of them weren't the "ground troop" type so that's why they aren't pictured here.

I just turned into a giddy little schoolgirl after reading this! The artwork is awesomely descriptive (as all his cover art has been so far) so you didn't give TOO much away but for anyone who's gone through or is going through the series (I've read the entire Pantheon) it suggests something specific that I was pleasantly surprised about in Age of Zeus and Age of Aztec

The Ten Avatars are now one of my favorite hero teams! Damn this is so unreal, I can't believe that this idea came from between James and me on his website blogs a couple of years ago

How much do you charge for book cover art?  This is NOT an idle question....

JakeMurray In reply to Arcalian [2013-12-02 01:58:04 +0000 UTC]

It depends on the project really. If you have something in mind, I'd be happy to discuss it with you further through email at jake@murr-art.com.
