I like this drawing, but Stanley looks to young to me. Stanford hade been working on this machine for 30 years, and depending on how time works in whatever dimension he ended up in, Stanley age should be between 40 - 70. The Stanley in this drawing looks between 20 - 30. Maybe its just me, but this Stanley looks very fit and thin-shouldered with wavy hair.

My guess is he didnβt actually kill Stan Pines, he really is Stan, and he faked his death then went around using fake identities until he had everything he needed to bring his brother back.

Simple answer, they are both stan.
Stanford and Stanley. The newspaper only said Stan pines was dead. It didn't say which stan.
Stanford, Stanley and Fiddleford bring the portal online. The portal destabilizes, sucking in Stanley. Needing an excuse for his brother's disappearance, Stanford crashes El Diablo (Stanley's Car), faking his death. McGucket feels the failure of the portal is his fault and, out of grief, erases his memories, leeding to the mad old hobo we know and laugh at.

I had a theory that maybe the "Stan" the newspaper was talking about was Stanley, if but only if that was indeed his name. We still don't know for sure what this brother's name is. My point is that maybe that car crash was Stanley faking his own death, which is when he disappeared. Maybe he DID die and Stanford brought him in from another universe.
Honestly I think that your interpretation is more correct. I just felt the urge to share my thoughts.

If he intended to be stuck there in the first place he wouldnt have left any of the journals back home. Since they hold tons of secrets he doesnt want ending up in the wrong hands.Β
for example. Gideon. Heck even one of his most unwanted happenings happened. Bill was summoned while he was away.Β
So i assume if he was planning on staying in that portal he wouldnt have left the journals. So back to the car crash theory.Β
Most probably stan faked it in order to cover up for stanleys disappearance. and not stanley faking his own death.Β
