Description
Lacock Abbey was founded in the 13th century by the countess of Salisbury. The abbey prospered, owing to the vast farmlands and pastures that it owned - in fact, even when I visited this place, there was a bunch of rather happy looking sheep grazing right in front of it! The abbey was also extremely lucky when it came to the Dissolution of the Monasteries: instead of being knocked down entirely, as it was customary, it was sold to Sir William Sharington, who merely demolished the church and left the rest of the structure intact. Thanks to him, we can now visit and enjoy this genuine medieval English abbey!
