Description I'm experimenting with different mediums and this is my very first try in acrylics. Definitely out of my comfort zone but interesting, quite a few surprises...
Looking forward to your comments, critiques and tips. Tips especially

That's a good first try.
It has a mohawk. <33333333

I'd suggest working from the background up. I can see you tried to work around the branch. Unless you want to do it all in one sitting, I'd say do the background, let it sit, and then some back to it.

Thanks a lot The mohawk was my special touch I did actually do the background first but only because I was terrified about painting the bird Cheers for the tip

awh thats so good for your first!
the only thing that i think could use some work
is the cute lil bird, maybe just some more colouring in the feathers and stuff, and maybe some more deatail in the eyes. and maybe a little bit darker leaves in there
but its awsome as it is; as welll.
the branch is awsome.
-very good!

no problem
and ooh ic, yah i no how hard it is when you paint and theres so many layers. you have to becareful. it would be terrible if that cute bird turned into a muddy blob.

Thanks so much for the great comment and tips I totally agree with everything you mentioned but I just had to leave it as it is, I've put so many layers on the poor bird there was a danger it would become a muddy blob. I might go back to it and re-do the eyes and leaves

I took a break to see your hair (which is short in your ID, is it not that length now?) and discovered this little gem!

Ooh...haven't done acrylics in ages, but you did a wonderful job with them for a first attempt! I wouldn't know where to begin to give you a tip, my friend! LOL! I would love to see you do some figure work with acrylics.

Nevertheless, I admire you for branching out and trying something more challenging! I think it's extremely healthy for any artist to do that from time to time. Watch it, Irene...you are making me fall deeply in love with you! (just kidding, G. Skills! )

Awww thank you so much, means a lot
Don't know about figure work, I've started using acrylics because I want to make a children's picture book about sheepies and acrylics seem to be a favourite medium for that kind of work. So now I'm struggling... my desk is a mess, I'm so not used to working with paints, they're scary and unpredictable. But I'm determined to keep practising.
Thanks heaps for support

Anytime, my friend!

Keep at it, I am sure you will master it, soon! Also, water color is a nice medium for a children's picture book, too. I miss working in water colors.

Ah, watercolours are even more scary and unpredictable! But then again, it's just a matter of practice... Might give them a try if I get too frustrated with acrylics

very cute!

i don't know if you've tried, but its important to paint out the background first before the subject or foreground because it always seems a little obvious with acrylics when you do them the other way around.

Which sucks, my mind works the opposite direction.

IreneShpak In reply to longlivethefonz [2008-04-28 17:05:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Yep, that's the way I've done it - background first, but not because it's the right way, I was just terrified of doing the bird

Nice job Irene. I've never tried acrylics yet but I've been experimenting with oils. Props for trying something new

IreneShpak In reply to golfiscool [2008-04-28 17:08:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Brian It's pretty tough changing after using one medium for years. Have you found that when you tried oils? Or was it easy? I'm struggling between wanting to improve myself in paints and giving it up completely and returning to my nice comforting colour pencils...

golfiscool In reply to IreneShpak [2008-04-28 17:22:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's very tough changing mediums. But I think that your prior knowledge from other mediums helps you in new mediums. At least that's been the case for me. No, don't give up painting Irene, do some more!!

Aww, how cute! I definitely hated working with acrylics and paints of any kind in art class...I am sooo messy. :-S But I'm impressed that this is new for you, because I never would've guessed!

spikebox [2008-04-26 22:12:40 +0000 UTC]

thats new for you! ...nice...i dont use acrylic but i can tell you this, its kinda flet, you need to use more darkers in this colors to add depth and volume, espcially to the bird , and to create more contrast ...well you know how to do those things perfect ,so go on! happy to see you trying some new media...

i wish to see some self portrait by you...i like your drawings ,usally you paint famus girls , i think your more then worthy to have one of you

IreneShpak In reply to spikebox [2008-04-28 17:14:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your advice. I agree, it could use more layers but I just decided to stop at some point because I was layering so much, there was a danger of the poor bird becoming a muddy blob. Will keep practising.
I've actually done a self portrait, if you're interested it's on my website on About Me page. Thank you for the compliment, but I find it hard drawing myself, not sure if I will try again

anyway, i'de love to see more of your drwaings\paintings in the future

aww thats very cute!!
it looks a bit strange because the background colours are so strong and the bird's colour is weak.
but for a first painting that looks really really good
