And much like Audie Murphy, he'd order them to remove some of the things that really happened because he didn't think audiences would believe them. Seems badass enough, he's just in a time and place where badassery isn't that useful.

Yeah, it's funny that both Stygian and Rockhoof ended up making a living by just telling people about their interesting lives. Any retired sailor (it's like the Marines; they may have stopped sailing but you only get an ex-sailor in the same way you get an ex-parrot) could probably do the same, and ask one for a tale if you don't believe me.

It's not just ex-military. I'm editing a memoir of someone who with his mom and younger brother became refugees and kept one step ahead of the Soviet army invading Germany in 1945.

Again, there's no such thing as ex-military. You may not be active duty, but you don't lose the attitude, no matter how much you might want to (the latter bit is the basis of First Blood, the Rambo movie that the rest of the series shat on by being the exact kind of mindless violence movies that it was denouncing the premises of)
