The principle of the four elements is widely known.
What is somewhat less known is that these four are again classified under four basic states.
Warm, cold, dry, wet.
The element of earth are as such a cold and dry element.

The old greeks described the world with these, as did many other cultures, reasoning that everything must be built up from them. For example, a frog must be built up from water, and earth, seeing as it lives in the water, almost always seems to be wet. And yet, when it dies it returns to the earth.
And so one could go on, explaining every species, and object on the planet.
