Description It is what is says.

Bunch of sketches from here and there... mostly here. Some of the rejected Wolverine doodles I was on a kick for a few weeks ago, some fantasy art stuff like usual, some planes... just a bunch of warmups and brain cleaners. Most all of these were originally sketched in red, and in some you can see the rough outlines that go below even a loosely pencilled sketch like the pair at the bottom. I really depend on underlying construction like this a lot, now, and I can't stress the importance of building that structure enough.

If you got a good framework, you can make anything stand up.

These days I usually use Manga Studio EX. It's a pretty sweet little digital ink platform.

Back in the bad old days when I used real ink, I was a fan of the Micron line of technical pens. Before that I used Rapidographs, but while they're excellent pens they require a good bit of maintenance.

what is a "red sketch"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to italianbeef [2006-10-25 03:58:33 +0000 UTC]

It's when I sketch in red pencil.

Some artists prefer blue, because traditionally back in the Xerox days blue pencil wouldn't reproduce when you made a copy, but with modern methods we can use just about any color, so long as it's pure enough to strip out easily in Photoshop.

Because red is a wider band along the visual spectrum it's easier to see (I think that's right, but I slept through several science classes), so I find red pencil easier to work with than blue. I use red for all the rough sketching and even some tightening of the lines and shapes, and then I usually go over the red pencil with a regular no.2 pencil for cleanup. When I scan the image into Photoshop, it's just a matter of adjusting the Hue & Saturation to strip all the red out of the image, making all the sketchy lines and smudges vanish as if they were never there.

Currently my favorite is the Ticonderoga brand of red "checking" pencils, which I buy from office supply stores, but any good red pencil should work fine. I actually hardly use them at all now, because so much of my recent work is drawn entirely in the computer.

yea thought so, i didnt know if red sketch meant like in a red crayon or like you changed the hue to red in photoshop or somn, but yea anyway i was just wonderin, do you find it prettty useful?.. oh and by the way i absolutely love your works, ur definetely one of my fav artists now , just a fucken awesome style!

Thanks!

Yeah, sketching in red really made a huge difference in how I draw... it gives you the freedom to be really loose and even messy at the sketch level, so you can find the best line and work out ideas without worrying about messing up the final.

It's actually the same reason I've become so fond of working with a tablet in-system... because with Undo and Layers and Copy-n-Paste I suddenly can afford to mess up, so I tend to expiriment a lot more.

I just have to know...do you draw with the side of your pencil?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to metalgearray09 [2006-09-25 02:37:04 +0000 UTC]

Not generally, no... I do some shading that way, though.

wow thanks for clearing that out.

0shade0 [2006-07-28 10:31:52 +0000 UTC]

absolutely love the bottem two!
and I have a question; the rough girl with back her towards us that you have started detailing, do you always start your drawings like that which become 'finished' pieces?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Inkthinker In reply to 0shade0 [2006-07-29 06:49:10 +0000 UTC]

Yep, always. Everything starts out rough and gets refined to a clean line.

I don't know anyone who really works without some sort of rough drawing first, espescially digital artists... the ability to Layer roughs and clean lines makes it very easy and free to mess with.

The light grey lines you see there are actually red, which usually gets stripped out in the final process, leaving only the clean pencil lines. It's a good trick for analogue drawing.

Damn the crap! Full sketches ahead! Don't mind me, I just got done reading a Dr. Suess tongue twister book to my nephew, so I'm a lil wiped. But I agree with the general consensous that you should submit a lot more sketches not just the stuff YOU like or think is cool.

Wulfsbane [2006-06-09 16:48:03 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree with you on that bit about having a good framework. It definitely saves a lot from making even the most mistakes of even the most basic of anatomical proportions but adds a great deal of substance to the character/object like how your sketches show As always you inspire as well as you enlighten. You really show a great deal of interest into this short haired swordswoman The first two panels at the top are definitely my favourites.

She's a character for an internal project. All shall be revealed in time!

Might be a long time, but... y'know, sometime.

More like a mess with a couple little bits of decent doodles here and there. I only show off the stuff I like... the books themselves contain a multitude of crappy failures as well.

Guess I'll just have to keep trying to figure out coloring for myself.

the eyes you use are so simple, but effective. i always get caught up in doing complex eyes, and then end up compiling crap for the rest of the drawing... i should use a structure, but i dont like them. i know how much they help, but i find it annyoing to find a decent drawable pose. i really have to learn anatomy and perspective >.<
