It's as if there is some eerie force carrying the umbrella away. Perhaps alien levitation? The beginning image to a thriller movie. Is the woods actually there? Or is it combined into the photo? Cause the arch way looks really ghostly. Very cool shot thoughΒ Β

Oui... Β Amazing shot. Β Can't imagine this in anything but the B&W. Β The crumbling ghost of a gateway is a powerful image.

(Both my father and one of my best friends passed away in the past two weeks, so this photo really slams into me right between the eyes. Β I'm not exactly sure, but it looks like she is standing in the gathering mist, releasing the handle of the umbrella for the wind to carry it away. Β That is a powerful image exactly what I am feeling at this very moment. Β You've given my heart a voice. Β Thank you...)

coming back to look at this piece... Β I'm sure you know the "rule of thirds", how you place your focal points at 1/3 points horizontally and vertically in the scene. Β I'm sure you also know that often, "rules" are made to be broken. Β
In this case, you've carefully centered your focal point, both vertically and horizontally, which I feel, not only pulls the eye upward (creating a sense of motion) from the figure to the umbrella to the arch of the bridge, but it creates a sense of peace in the center of tension. Β The mist creates a strong sense of the unknown, uncertainty, fear, doubt, ruin (especially in the crumbling blocks), but powerfully offset by the courageous and ultimately peace filled stance of the figure, and her determined act of letting go of the umbrella. Β It speaks of courage, defiance, but ultimately confidence, in spite of darkness and fear.
(This part may be a bit of a stretch, but I see that her back is to the gate, as if she has already walked through it, and THEN makes her act of releasing the umbrella to the wind. Β Again, I don't know if that was something you saw yourself, or if it was just something the photo for me to pick up on... but that itself is powerful. Β Have to think on that one a bit more......)
