Description Comments are always so important to me.  That is why I've decided to open the discussion on '' To blur or not to blur''

Granted, I lack experience with the blur tool.  Any suggestions, comments tips and tricks would be greatly I mean BIG TIME greatly appreciated!

Final Edit.  Finally, the final.  The lesser blur won the vote and I think it looks much better after incorporating all of your wonderful feedback.  Thanks to all of you!

Nonsence!  We are all learning....the learning curve is somewhat different for each and everyone of us.  However, all we try to do as individual artists is get better at expressing our inner visions of how we see the world that surrounds us.

I think that your art is getting better with every painting you make Spacegryphon!  Stick with it!

I'm still struggling with interpreting the world as I see it....I see your expression of art in a totally different way....  You're reinventing it and your vision is beautiful!

Whoa whoa whoa whoa! I just want to stare at that face for hours!!!  Seriously, this is so gorgeous Indu! All the different colours of her face make me forget about the hair. But I do love the curls. If I were to blur anything it would be more towards the edges of the hair, perhaps the part that is falling over the other shoulder and leave the curls more defined close to her face! Well done!! Would love to have you as a guest painting with me on stream one day!

Whoa!  What a sweet thing to say Lara!  Thank you so much for your touching comment.     Well the curls seem to have it so I'll follow all of this great advice and post again once the touch up is complete.  You deserve ALL the Mangos my friend !!! LOL!

Awesome portrait! Right one looks better for me I'd say blur version doesn't look good enough because it's to much blur in it. The bulk of the hair still is in the focus so that I would leave blur only on the hair that are far away from us, something like this .
P.S. Also I added a little highlights on the nose and lips

I see what you mean Ash.  Blur is not necessarily a bad thing but this was way too much!  I simply LOVE what you did with it!  BTW, I'm really blown away at how you seem to be improving so much!  Way to go and thanks again for the tips!

Indu!!! this is amazing! o.o I'm blown away!
I'm not a real fan of blur though and those curls are soooo good! I vote for not blur for sure!

I second mita-bonita comments, the unblurred version is much better IMO. I post few pictures but I like them each time. I hope you're doing fine by the way. :-D

Well if an expert photographer like yourself prefers the unblurred version....That just proves that I was on the wrong track with the blur.  Contente de te revoir mon ami, et MERCI!

Ha! Ha! Not that expert but yeah, your deep of field rendering was flawed/inconsistant with how it works in reality. It's good to see some of your work too! You did very good with this one. I don't post much for a while now but it's actually because I'm working for few months now for a client and he doesn't want me to show pictures until it's the right moment. Stay tuned!

First of all it's great to see your art again, it's beautiful and I wish it was a little bit bigger
And about the blur, I'm not a fan unless you want to imitate a photo effect of focus area. So for me, totally the version to the right.
Cheers!

Your skin rendering is so perfectly realistic!

These are gorgeous Indu! The blurred is a bit better than the un-blurred because of the depth of field effect but it loses nuance and structure, it is too much blur!

I would recommend you blur on a duplicate layer and then turn it on and off while blurring to compare it to the un-blurred version. You can also add a mask to the blurred layer and mask out the areas that are too blurred.

The cheekbones, the eyes, and parts of the nose shouldn't be blurred like that since they're the general focal area, best to leave them sharp. The areas of hair closer to the viewer should be much less blurred; the hair is the biggest downfall of the blurred version, it is too much blur!

You have really nice values and structure though, hope the critique helps!

Thank you Metatabi!  Such wise advice..of course, the layer mask could be just the thing that I needed to pace myself while trying this out!  You've gotten soo dang good!

Now that is what I love about DA!  Thank you so much for your honest feed back, it's soo appreciated !  To be honest, this was not a hair study, it rarely is LOL!  I suck at painting hair, though strangely enough, I love painting fur (go figure). It's also what I love about painting in photoshop...lucky for me I'd saved an untweaked file.  Here are the two back to back...well front to front I guess.  Discussions are now open.  Thanks again for the feed back and a Warm welcome to DA!
