Sorry about the grey background.. I wanted to have it white at first, but in the reference it was black, so..i just darkened it a bit. hence, the ugly greyness.

not at all! don't be such a flatliner 
the backgrounds fine, I use blurry mid tones for my backdrops too, but you can definitely go in there and lighten up some fuzzy forms, and do the same with a bit darker tones, you know, mix it up a bit.
