Description There once was a young girl named Innocence, whose very heart and soul cried out for the people of her country and world. She saw the sins that her fellow people would commit: the lust the lies, the killings- and she promised herself that she would always keep herself pure, as to not add to the world's sins.

Innocence was but a young girl, however, and had not yet even started junior high. Yet she promised herself, "I will keep myself pure, as not to add to the world's sins."

When Innocence started her years at junior high, she kept her promise to herself as entirely as humanly possible. She was given numbers of juvenile labels by those who were jealous of her purity, but she brushed them aside, telling herself, "I will keep myself pure, as not to add to the world's sins."

On her last year of junior high, however, she couldn't help but feel that something was missing. In her mission to keep herself pure, Innocence had never gained a companion. She hadn't realized that setting herself apart from the world's sins would also set herself apart from the world. She hadn't wanted that. She couldn't dream of a world where she journeyed through life on her own. Alone. Without a friend to keep herself feeling loved.
So Innocence set out to find a friend, so that she might have the companionship she was missing. However, though day by day she would search nearly everywhere for but one friend, she came up empty.
"Why?" Innocence asked, "Why does no one want to befriend me? I don't steal, I don't lie, I don't gossip- why will no one accept me?"
"Because you're too high and mighty." they all told the young girl, "How are we to be friends with someone with standards above our own?"
Innocence was shocked at this. They do not accept me, not because I am not good enough, but not bad enough? The thought perplexed her. Innocence wanted friends, but also wanted to keep her promise to herself, but she could not have both, could she?
As she was pondering, her older brother, Compromise, who she loved dearly, came to her and inquired of what was bothering her.
She explained to her brother her dilemma, and a patronizing smile that pretended to care was carved into his face. "Oh, this is not a difficult problem to solve!" said her brother, Compromise, "If you cannot chose between your purity, or having companionship, the solution is easy." he gave a small paused and looked deeply into his young sister's bright blue eyes, "Chose both."
"Why brother!" she said, perplexed ever further, "That is not possible! They want me to lose my purity, so how am I to lose it and keep it? Brother, I want to keep myself pure, but I so wish to be happy."
Her brother smiled further, "The solution is simple, only take from your purity what isn't necessary!" Before his sister, who still could not understand, could ask her question, Compromise continued, "Would these friends ask you to kill? Steal? Lie? Of course not! My dear sister, you don't have to hurt anyone! You don't even have to steal, or lie, or lust, or anything that could cause harm to someone. But permit yourself to seem like them: Do whatever they do, wear what they wear, talk about what they talk about, you'll only seem like them, but you will know in your heart that you are pure. If they truly are your friends, they won't ask that you give much, but if you truly wish to be happy, then you can give a small portion of your purity, can you not?"
Innocence hugged her brother, thanking him for his wisdom and went on her way.

She then took from her purity, replacing a small part with pettiness, gossip, and loose lips, but it was only a small part. She told herself, "I have not forgotten my promise, and have only introduced menial sins to myself. I will  keep myself pure from now on, as not to add to the world's major sins."

So Innocence gained a small group of friends who she loved dearly. She could feel a small part of her purity dwindle away, as if a bright blue gem was fading to gray, but she shrugged the feeling aside, telling herself it was only a small part.

Innocence was happy with her newfound friends. They made her laugh, smile, and very rarely ever did anything that was really "wrong". Sure they were humans and made mistakes, but Innocence told herself that it was to be expected.

A few years passed and she became a sophomore at high school, and she once again felt as if she were missing something. All of her friends had started dating and were constantly seen with their boyfriend or girlfriend, while she was left alone. For the first few months, she denied wanting a boyfriend, telling others it was because she didn't want the trouble, but in her heart she knew that she might have to sacrifice more of her purity. Innocence had not forgotten about her promise, and did try to uphold it most of the time.

However, she could not escape this feeling of desire for a man to hold her, and tell her all of the things she couldn't ask anyone else to tell her. She wished to be told she was beautiful, and loved, and wanted- that wasn't a sin. She knew that. She was only afraid of what else she might have to give for a man.
She could see the quick change that occurred in all of her friends after they had given themselves to another. They became two faced; one person to their friends, and another to their lover. They had picked up all of their lover's bad habits and had given their lovers theirs. Not to mention the question of how far physically they had gone, for she knew that none of her friends were still pure in that way.

So Innocence, for another year refrained from any kind of romantic love, telling herself, "Even though I've made more mistakes than in the past, I want to remain as pure as possible, so I do not become an addition to the world's sins."

However, soon enough she met a boy by the name of Prize who she fell in love with. Prize was a tall, handsome boy who every girl wished to have, yet he sought out Innocence for reasons she did not understand. She was nearly a young woman at this point and could make decisions for herself, but she was troubled, and did not know which path to take. So she went to her brother, Compromise, for advice once more.
"Brother," spoke Innocence, "I do not know what to do. There is a boy by the name of Prize who I love and who loves me, but I do not know if I want to be involved with him, for I fear losing more of my purity."
Her brother smiled as he did years ago and told her, "My dear sister, do you think you will have to give something up for the man? Surely you won't have to lose any purity will you?"
His sister replied, "I do not know brother, I only want to keep myself pure, but I so wish to be loved."
Compromise stroked Innocence's hair with his hand, "My dear sister, would this boy expect you to kill? Steal? Lie? Of course he wouldn't, Innocence! If the man truly loves you, he won't ask that you give much, but if you truly wish to be loved, you can give a small portion of your purity, can you not?"
Innocence hugged her brother and thanked him for his wisdom, and went on her way.

She then took from her purity, replacing a part with lust, pride, and envy, but it was only a part. She told herself, "I have not forgotten my promise, and have only introduced normal sins to myself. I will  keep myself pure from now on, as not to add to the world's great sins."

Prize became Innocence's lover, and Innocence felt loved. She could feel a  part of her purity dwindle away, as if a blue gem was fading to gray, but she shrugged the feeling aside, telling herself it was only a part.

Time went by, and Innocence found a hint of guilt within her happiness, but she could find no reason for it. She hadn't committed any great sins, as far as she knew. Yes, she had been places she probably shouldn't have, and had done things with Prize that she knew were immoral, but no one was ever hurt! Everyone was always okay, and it seemed as though nothing were amiss. Yet the feeling would not leave Innocence.

A few years passed and Innocence found herself starting college. It had been a frightening step for her, but Innocence was a smart girl, and knew that she could handle everything. Of course, she would have to start from the beginning, for she lost most of her friends because of college moves, and she had lost Prize months before her senior year ended.

So Innocence set out to find more friends and a lover, and found that it was far easier this time than the last. Within a few weeks, Innocence had a group of friends and a lover that seemed much like what she had lost. "Perhaps I've become better," said Innocence to herself, "Strong enough that I can make decisions with ease now."

However, she paid for these friends with a little more purity lost, but she didn't even care anymore. So long as she didn't hurt anyone, it didn't matter what she did. After all, it was only a sin if someone was hurt.

At the end of her freshman year, Innocence, confident in her new life, was invited to a party to celebrate surviving her and her class's freshman year. Of course, she would never have gone to this event years ago, not with the alcohol, drugs, and sex involved, but so long as no one was hurt, it was okay and moral in her eyes.

She wasn't even confused as to what she should do, and didn't even bother calling her brother, for she didn't need his advice anymore. She could handle her new life all on her own.

So Innocence enjoyed herself, relishing the blissful moments that saturated the night. She ever found herself drinking a little, but a drink every so often wasn't a sin, even her mother had said that! She wasn't going to experiment with the drugs or have any sex!

Well-

Probably not.

There was one man there, Taker, who she couldn't find herself able to look away from. Perhaps it was the alcohol. He was a pretty hot guy, who reminded her a lot of Prize, only, more arrogant and angry. But she liked it.

Of course, Want (her current boyfriend) would kill the pair of them if they ever… Well, he didn't have to know, did he? Want was a class above her, and not even there… She could get away with it, right? What Want didn't know wouldn't hurt him.

So Innocence drank with Taker until they were both fully drunk, and without hesitation, they slept together.

Innocence lusted.

About a week later, Want found out. He went first for Taker, who was much smaller than him, and beat him with an iron rod until he was satisfied. He walked away not knowing if Taker was alive or dead.

He then went for Innocence, who was working at a summer job, and asked her to ride home with him, claiming there was an emergency. So Innocence went with him, and he led her to a long stretch of woods in the middle of nowhere.
He wasn't going to kill Innocence, for he had loved to until earlier that day, but he didn't know what to do with his anger. So he beat her with his bare hands until her face was covered in blood and bruises. Want's knuckles had swollen, and Innocence was curled up on the floor of the truck, fearing death was coming. But Want had done enough, so he pushed Innocence from his truck and left her with her wounds.

Innocence panicked and ran as far away from his truck as possible into the woods. She was scared. Terrified. Mortified. She couldn't go back now- not anymore. She couldn't return home to face her parents. So she bided her time in the woods.
Not wanting to be found out, she texted  her parents and told them that she would be at a friends house that night and not to worry about her.

Innocence lied.

Innocence laid down, not knowing what to do or where to go. Her text would keep her parents at bay for a day, but then what? Things couldn't get any worse.

The next morning, things got much worse. Rather, she found out how bad things were. Morning sickness. She woke up and found herself nauseous, perhaps from the beating yesterday, or her lack of food, but as the day went on, Innocence knew the truth.

She was pregnant.

No. No, no, no, no, NO! This could NOT be happening! She would not let this happen. It was almost dark at this point, so she only had a few minutes of sight left to gather twigs, sticks, whatever else she could find. But not for a fire.

She'd heard of people doing this with hangers before, why couldn't it work with twigs? Right?

After minutes, maybe hours -she couldn't tell- of pain, tears, and blood, she could tell that it wasn't working. She couldn't reach far enough, and the baby hadn't developed enough. She had to try something simpler. Barbaric, painful, but simple.

She ran as fast as she could into every tree she could find, beat her stomach with her own fists, and did as much damage to her baby, and herself, as possible. She was bleeding, wounds and cuts from the beating had reopened, and new ones had been made in her attempt at killing her baby. Innocence was exhausted: physically, mentally, and emotionally. As she laid there, she felt it- an otherworldly feeling of a life leaving the body: the baby was dead.

Innocence killed.

Innocence smiled, sickly happy that she had accomplished her goal. At least she had taken care of one problem.
As she laid there, the events of the past week filled her mind.

Lust. Lies. Murder.

"WHAT HAVE I BECOME!?" Innocence screeched into the night, not expecting an answer; yet she received one.

"A monster." spoke a familiar voice from the thickets of dark trees, "A heathen, a sinner. You've become what you hated the most. Isn't that right…" the voice stepped forward so that innocence could see him better, "…sister?"
"Brother!" Innocence exclaimed, a mix of shock and bile filled her throat, "Wh- why are you here?" she asked.

"My dear sister," he said with his smile, now obviously fake, "I think you'd much rather know why you're here. See, you're friends did not ask much of you, did they? They only asked for a little! A little lie, a little lust, a little hurt, what they asked was menial, what they did was microscopic, what they took was so small!… But… what you took from yourself was enormous.
My dear sister, you were always the most loved. Mother and Father always adored you for your promise to not add to the worlds sins, and they looked at me as they did every other sinner on the street! But now, you are the heathen, and I can finally be loved."
Compromise turned to leave,  a look of accomplishment and disgust displayed on his face. He threw a small vanity mirror over his shoulder, "Take one last look at yourself, if none of this makes sense, and then you may understand."
The compact landed next to Innocence's head, and the dust from the dirt filled her eyes, mixing with the already present tears. She opened it to see that it lit up and found immediately what Compromise was talking about.

Her eyes.
Her eyes!
Her eyes!

The ones that had been a bright, vivid blue -that shined with a sense of purity- had gone stone. Cold. Gray.

Innocence swept the ground she laid on with tear filled eyes and for the first time realized that she had no idea where she was. She was lost. Lost. Lost

Innocence, was lost.

Honestly I think this is absolutely perfect. I find so many people who think they have to give up purity to be accepted (especially girls). In reality patience (rather than giving in) is what is necessary to make them happy because through patience one will eventually find others as "pure" or innocent as they are, or at least very very close.
I really enjoyed this because it's exactly what happens to so many good people out there, they don't intend to become bad people. They just want to feel loved, but without realizing it they go steeply down the wrong path very quickly.
Absolutely perfect, touching, moving and well written story. I can't think of a single way you could improve it at all, except removing the last sentence. Repeating times 3 is perfect emphasis on it's own without the need for repeating it in the last sentence. Other than that spectacular, I give you a heavy round of applause!
