Part 1

History Notes:

- At about 4:30 that afternoon, the Texans burned Vince's Bridge, which was the only way for either army to get off the flat land without having to swim.

- The Texans moved quickly and only stopped when they were very close to Santa Anna's camp to open fire. The Mexicans were caught completely by surprise. Some of them had even been asleep.

- Many of the Mexicans had also been trained the fight in ranks, whereas, the Texans had no problems with ambushes and charges, leaving many of the Mexicans ill equipped to fight without stopping to fire off volleys as a group (the British had a similar problem during the American revolution. Sound familiar yet?)

- The battle lasted only 18 minutes, but minor skirmishes continued for a while afterward. 700 Mexicans were killed with 208 wounded, while only 9 Texans died and only 30 were wounded. Santa Anna escaped during the confusion though. General Sam Houston was also shot in the ankle, but he was fine.

- Santa Anna had changed out of his uniform in order to blend in with the other troops, but search parties grew suspicious when they saw a man being saluted as "El Presidente." There were even rumors that Santa Anna wore silk underwear, so when the man being referred to as El Presidente was captured and found to indeed be wearing silk underwear, they knew they had the right guy.
