Description Hurricane Katrina depicted as a panel from the Maciejowski Bible.
Medieval art (or in this case, book illustration) contained a lot of symbolism. There is a lot of symbolism in this piece for me, some as obvious as the red cross and blue roofing tarps, and some more hidden. There are drowned people and a dog under the waters. There is a white wagon, bearing soldiers and a red cross banner, which has a nail stuck in one tire. A large white tent stand behind them, and roofers work to the side.

The style is taken from the Maciejowski Bible, a large 13th c. old testament that was elaborately illustrated with graphic depictions of war and smitings and all that great old testament stuff. If you're not familiar with medieval MS, it's a pretty distinct illustration style, with little turrets and archways above the scenes and columns seperating the panels.

The piece was created using traditional means, ink and paint on drafting vellum then was scanned in and tidied up a bit with photoshop. This piece was used as a cover for a program guide for a large SCA war in Mississippi.

This piece was done several months after Hurricane Katrina, I experienced the entire storm a half-block off the beach from the light house in Biloxi, MS.

This is really outstanding. I can't say enough about it. Great story and symbolism -- ruin and reconstruction. Great reproduction of a favorite manuscript. and altogether it has a crisp, bright appearance.

I hope you will agree to the inclusion of this artwork in my group, #SCA-Publications.

Un petit mot de France. Superbe enluminure. Faire renaรฎtre cette technique en parlant d'รฉvรฉnements d'aujourd'hui, c'est la voie que je recherchais depuis longtemps ! Merci.

I'd like to acknowledge comments about the lack of non-caucasian figures in this piece and state that making this was cathartic for myself, not for all of Biloxi, and not as a documentary. I'm glad other people have connected with it, but it is not meant to be a universal perspective on the events of that time during and after the storm.

What a whitewashed Biloxi! That's okay, as people have pointed out, you were just trying to be "traditional," since Black people apparently didn't exist in medieval Europe. Except, wait... [link]

I wasn't in the lighthouse, I was up the hill from the light house and Beau Rivage.

Very accurate in appearance, but I'm awfully certain that the original Maciejowski Bible was done in the thirteenth century and they might have added text later on.

Good work!

And by the bible I mean these illuminated bibles, though if you went to a catholic school like I did, they tried to tell you Jesus was blond

Probably because there were no black people in the bible - I think I, personally, would have added them anyway but if he wanted to stay completely faithful to the style then it wouldn't have been accurate.
