*EDIT* So I got a critique on this piece, which was nice and one of the things I was told was that the mismatched shading of the hair and skin just looked awkward so I tried to match the shading. Let me know if you guys think it's better!

Back Story of the Piece

So the idea of this piece actually drew from my own personal experiences. As many of you probably don't know, drawing is actually only a hobby of mine. I've never taken an art class before except the one I took as a requirement in 7th grade (been a while since then orz =w=; I'm old).

In real life I am an artists in the sense I create, but my medium for my work lies differently then paints, photoshop, copics, etc.

I actually have my entire body as a resource (AND NO NOT LIKE THAT!!!) Well if you haven't guessed it already, I'll tell you. I am an aspiring dancer!!! It's what I major in, in college and I plan on trying out for a few professional companies when I leave for my two dance intensives in the next two weeks ^^.

Although I have experience in Ballet and Modern (if you guys know what that is :/) My strongest form of dance is definitely Chinese Dance. That's why when I read the description of OC I got an idea.

The inspiration from his piece came from the Chinese "dragon dance" or 舞龙, 舞龍, wǔ lóng. Though I think it's actually the lion dance by looking at the picture ;; (excuse my if I'm wrong), which is 舞狮, 舞獅, wǔshī.

Anyways, he said dragon dance so I drew a dragon XD...

Although these two dance forms are not the forms I do (I do Chinese Traditional Dance) All dancers or choreographers have a similar thought process.

The idea of the piece is, as a dancer or choreographer, you must always be living in the moment. A professional is always thinking of the "dance" going over and over the steps in the choreography.

Any good dancer or actor will know that to be good, you can't just "dance" or "act". You have to embrace your role or character, be the person who your trying to portray. Emotions come across better that way and the audience doesn't get bored XD. The fact that the dragon is coming out of her head is a demonstration that she has not only embraced the dance, but the dance has become a part of her.

As I stated before you must always be thinking when you dance. Some examples of what dancers could be thinking of are things like, "where can I make movements sharper or softer? Am I pointing my feet? Is my alignment correct? Can I reach or extend my leg further? Am I relaxed and is my core engaged?" (of course different criteria for different forms of dance) things like that.

The swirls are a reference to the above. It's her constant cycle of thoughts about her dancing. "What am I doing and how can I make it better?"

The colors represent the all the different movements and ideas that the girl may have in her movement pallet and the Sakura flowers were put in there not only to represent orientalism (another part of Jad's piece), but to show dancing; along with the girls thoughts.
