i-stamp — About a double standard

Description The grand majority of motivational posters use images that don't belong to the user and they don't have permission for. This causes quite a stir on a community art site.
But I notice a lot of people don't make the same kind of stink about stamps hosting images obtained from google image searches.

I use, and only will use, something I've drawn myself, public domain images or stock I've gotten permission to use for my stamps.

I think people don't get upset about stamps because they're more dA extras than anything.
They're used to show people what you are like, and so if say you're a fan of something, it makes sense to have an image from that something in it so it's recognizable.
I do agree that for something "generic", for lack of a better word, people should try their best to use public domain/stock images.

I came across a challenge with the Kimba stamp making it recognizable. But I think the text plus the background choice made it work. If I had to, I'm sure I could do a passable fanart of whatever I need to in order to meet my own requirements, like I did with the Stitch stamp.

Ah, that's really cool. I was really impressed with the Kimba/Simba stamp, because you didn't even need to put any characters in there.
I don't think I'd have the courage to make it from scratch, because I'd be too scared to mess it up or accidentally change the style. Really great to see original content in stamps. Great work.

I use, and only will use, something I've drawn myself-this is the best solution, I think.

Lovely texture in the background
But I disagree with what you say about quotes, I believe it's okay to use somebody's words as long as you give credits. Sometimes it's just impossible to reach those people.

I don't mind using cited quotations. Just uncited ones.

The permission part is mostly about art or screen captures which aren't public domain.

Oh, then we agree

I think you mean "copyright infringement," not plagiarism.

Actually I didn't, because plagiarism more broadly covers 'general theft' which may not be copyright infringement (such as non-commercial vector traces or lifted, uncited quotations from non-copyrighted sources)

When does that last one happen?

Mostly with cause stamps, popular quotes attributed to authors who don't hold the copyright (too old or said informally) but who still unquestionably authored it. (Poor Oscar Wilde.)

Mainly with students in college; they will copy from the person next to them.

I mean in stamps and demotivationals.

I believe someone mentioned it already, but say I was to quote someone, but neglected to put quotes, or even let people know the quote was not mine.
Ex- If there was a need for it, I could take what you just typed and put it on a stamp and claim it as my own. That would be plagiarism.

Seems pointless to try and police that in this digital age.

Yah.....I go through the front page every monday, and I can't believe the amount of theft and policy violations I see on here. Hell, I reported 26 photos this week. Sadly it takes way to long for things to be addressed on here.

I mean policing copyrighted images is a task in itself, but policing small plagiarism violations? What's the point? Nobody's making any money off of stamps and demotivationals, anyway.

I guess....but there are people who work hard on their art, and it is an insult to them when their work is stolen, traced, or slightly modified to look different.

Again, that's not plagiarism. Plagiarism is just taking text and not citing properly.

Depends on who you talk to. College professors will not treat it so lightly as that. Try to turn in a paper you did not do, ect, and it will be treated as plagiarism.

Again, we're talking about STAMPS and DEMOTIVATIONALS.

You do not have to yell.
1.
the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.
2.
something used and represented in this manner.
