If you coloured them in a certain way the bolts and armour would look like Diglett from PokΓ©mon lol

Layers? Sure I can explain it, but it's a little hard to describe over text. XD
Let's see...
First of all, the layer you start on shouldn't be drawn on. It should remain blank, as a safety precaution. Because if you draw on that first layer, it's so much harder to edit the image you make.
When you start drawing, make a new layer and draw on that. It's wise to name each layer so that you don't get confused. You can usually do this by double-clicking on the layer.
The way I use my layers goes like so:
The first layer: remains blank.
New layer: I draw the framework on that, like stick figures and such as a rough guide to what I want to draw.
The layer above that: Lineart.
The layer above that: Clothes.
The layer above that: Colour.
Then, you can go back to each layer and delete whatever is on it. For example, if I draw the lineart on the Lineart layer, then the clothes on the Clothes layer, I click back onto the Lineart layer and erase the parts you can't see because of the clothing.
In fact, this may be confusing you. If you like, I can record myself making a drawing from scratch, and explain it to you. I have a livestream channel so I can link you directly once I've made it.
