Description Character: San, from the Studio Ghibli animated film Princess Mononoke

After nearly a decade of intent and two very unsatisfactory, last-minute versions, I finally invested time in making this costume as film-accurate as I could, in time for Emerald City Comic Con and SakuraCon this year. The mask had been mostly finished many years ago, but the old cape had yellowed, and every other part of the old costume was rushed and didn't look right.

I essentially started from scratch with this costume. New necklace, new dress, new tunic, new earrings, new cape, new hood-ears, actual booties, a real hood to let me wear the mask on my face or slung on my back, and a wig (Inigo in jade green, from Arda-wigs) styled and dyed the proper green-brown color of San's hair in the film. I also made her a prop spear which separates to become her knife, though this was a last-minute addition to the costume (literally made the night before the convention).

Everything was patterned, sculpted, and sewn myself. The cape was hand-stitched out of pieces of sheepskin and faux fur. Her midnight-blue underdress laces up the back with ribbon through stitched eyelets. I sewed booties for her from pigskin suede that tie with two leather laces.

Her white tunic was difficult to pattern so that it lay fitted over my chest but still appeared to have the drape it does in the film. I ended up compromising and adding darts (though I'm annoyed with how obvious they are). It fits better when the weight of the cape is not dragging it up by an inch.

Despite little nitpicks and corrections (possible mask remake - it's a bit too big) to make in future, overall I'm MUCH happier with how this costume looks and fits and had a blast wearing it at both conventions. I'm also grateful to *DanMorrill for walking out with me to do a photoshoot with barely any notice! It was a lot of fun!

This is amazing! I've been working on my own Princess Mononoke cosplay and am stuck on the cape. How did you attach the ears to the hood and prevent the cape from sliding back when wearing it?

Amazing! I did a complete last minute cosplay of San at the Tri-Con where I live and it turned out okay, but I was unhappy with it. (By last minute, I mean i was sewing stuff 5 minutes before leaving xD) You did an excellent job! I'm quite jealous

I'm honestly surprised any time I hear a cosplayer is completely finished and ready to go without any last-minute adjustments before a convention.
Thank you very much! I wish I could start off looking a bit more like her but I tried to make up for it with a strong costume and wig.

So, how exactly did you make the mask? It looks like fabric, or is it clay?

It's neither actually. Paper-mache-covered foam.

Your San cosplay looks SO good! I love all of the small details that you got spot on that others always seem to miss (the frayed dress and tunic; mask details; her booties!). Thank you for sharing costume info, too! I let my friends vote for my cosplay for this year, and almost everyone chose San! So, I have a lot of work ahead xD I can only hope that it will be CLOSE to as good as yours!

Aw, wow, what a nice comment, thank you! There are a few things about this costume I feel a bit critical about but that's pretty much always the case. It's just because I'm such a stickler for details and accuracy and it's so difficult when you're not a perfect physical match for the character, and the source material is somewhat inconsistent.
Good luck and have fun with your cosplay! Hope I can see it when it's done!

Thank you! It's true, though, her designs are inconsistent in the movie and in photos! Haha that's tough for us (I'm detail-obsessed also). But you did such an amazing job!!

Right now I'm trying to figure out what fabrics to use. May I ask where you got your cloak fur from? I'm also torn about her tunic, because in some stills it looks fuzzy.

Aw, thanks! I picked up a couple of good-sized sheepskin rugs at IKEA and cut them apart and sewed them back together to be wider and have the right shape. I also used bits of my old cape which was made from a huge, very deep-pile sheepskin rug from Costco many years ago. There is also some faux fur in there, which I got at a local fabric store.
I also thought her tunic looked fuzzy, so I decided it must be some kind of fluffy hide or suede. I happened to find a suede-back satin at the fabric store in the perfect color and I used the suede side. I really like how it looks and feels. It gives the tunic some texture and clings to my form. (Though the static was a pain while sewing, haha!)

omg rugs!! That is so awesome!!! Haha I would have never thought to do that xD Shoot I wish IKEA was close to me. I wonder how their shipping prices are... Suede would be perfect! I think my local fabric shop sells a microsuede or something. I'll have to check it out. Thank you so much for all of your help!

Although I can see why you don't like the darts (I also get obsessed with everything being perfectly accurate), the costume looks great. It's way more important for it to fit you correctly, and it fits your torso just perfectly. The whole this is an absolutely amazing cosplay.
