Description
Icharieyel is one of the Burning Ones, a class of powerful, high-ranking beings tasked with protecting the purifying Holy Fire of the unknowable Absolute. Each of the six Burning Ones guard one of six aspects of the Holy Fire. Icharieyel protects the Holy Fire’s aspect of Change. This is the change potentially initiated by the Holy Fire’s destructiveness and resulting aftermath. Icharieyel’s numerous orange beaks juxtaposed against its many black feathers are reminiscent of dying embers nestled against black ash and soot.

Its eyes constantly blink and look around in all directions. It sees things that have happened, things that are happening, and all possible futures. Its wings infinitely furl and unfurl. Its many beaks open and close, but no sound is made. The only noise surrounding it is a steady drone that appears to come from all directions. Occasionally, the intensity of the piece of Holy Fire it protects will prove to be too much for the creature and it will spontaneously combust, becoming completely engulfed in flames. When the fire burns out the creature reappears seemingly unharmed.

I've been wanting to finish this concept for a very long time. The first drawing of this fiery-billed araçari inspired seraph was in 2015. It was far beyond my skill level at the time, so I had to shelf it. I attempted it again in 2017. The 2017 version was much better, but still, I couldn't seem to pull it off. I'm very happy to say that 4-5 years later, this idea is finally complete. Almost nothing has changed conceptually except the creature was originally holding a Sacred Heart symbol. I changed that to an upright triangle (the alchemical symbol for fire) to better fit the seraph idea. It was also really cool to get the opportunity to use gold leaf for the first time. I really love how to gold leaf added to the piece.
