I pulled WAY back on the saturation on the base colors because saturated colors can't work with this method well. I was thinking of our conversation as I did it too. I just hope I can pull it off in sequential pages. Thanks, Tsuki!

no problem man, though How do you choose which color you're going to lay out on top of the characters? I tend to struggle while doing that so then I just end up leaving it as it was. Curse my easily annoyed self. D:
for sequential pages you're going to have to make good use of the lasso-tool methinks.

It's just a bit of trial and error, but since it's just a matter of about 3 steps it's no big deal to try it a few different ways without becoming frustrated. There are 2 tint layers, one for shadows and another for highlights. Changing those changes everything.

hulkdaddyg In reply to tsukijin [2010-04-03 17:11:49 +0000 UTC]
I am just trying to follow Chamba's method. The shadowing is everything. I get the impression though he fills in everything and then cuts away at where he wants his highlights, but I use the pen tool to create shapes for shadows. After that it's cake.

You need at least 10 layers to do his style.
1. lines (linear burn) I put my opacity to 50%
2. Shadow tint (hue) 50%
3. deeper selective shadows (linear burn) 30%
4. Gradient Layer (linear burn) 30%
5. 25 25 25 0 layer (linear burn) I'm not sure why it's there but it's possible that it makes it CMYK
6. Highlights (overlay) 15%
7. Highlights tint (overlay) 40%
8. Highlights blur (overlay) 30-50%
9. add shine (overlay) 50-100%
10 pure white (normal) 100%
I don't know how it plays out in gimp but It may help. also the line layer is in-between the shadows and highlights layers

Cool, glad to help! I did forget about the base colors, but I think you get my drift on that. The lines, however should be translucent and gray. Chamba says he uses a 3px constant line for his whole pic. I use a tapering 7px line using the pen tool. His is hand drawn. The point is the lines are only there for support not to be prominent unlike all that I had done previously.

Definitely man, just the angle of the face alone surpasses the previous front-view avatar.

The only thing I'd point out is composition related.
Your pose, size and position for Nox lead your viewer off the page.
I'd reverse the pose, make him a bit smaller.
It'll close the composition and bring the eye back to your focus point.

Cool, thanks Rod. I was thinking more about the individual characters though. I can definitely fix that but I was wondering how you felt about my take on their looks this time.

Like I said, they all look great.
You've zeroed in on a technique that works for you, go with it.
The Preylord is exceptional and stands out compared to the others.
