In a sense it's a collaboration. While I do all the work myself for the story, I craft it around the existing origin. I try to make all the elements of the character fit into my universe. With DaL-Lii I had to make her an Elgarian because I don't have a Tetram alien species in my universe. With Su Li here, I did a little research into Chinese dragons and gods.
