Bit of a throwback to something I made last summer. I have made a number of faux dichroic glass dragons at this point, but they've all been made on a black or other dark colored base, and I was curious to see if I could pull off the look on a white base. So this was one of my attempts, and it really didn't turn out how I expected. The dichro effect is attained by applying colored ink to a layer of gilding foil on top of a layer of clay, and then thinning the foil/clay sandwich by running it through a pasta machine, which fragments the layer of foil, giving that distinct dichro look. I knew the ink color would bleed through the foil onto the surface of the clay, but I had no idea how much would get through. Turns out it's quite a bit!

The final result isn't bad - the soft, swirled bits of color are quite interesting to look at. But it's definitely not the look I was hoping for, as this is much more of a soft rainbow dragon than a white dragon with rainbow scales. I ended up accenting this dragon with some of my custom mixed rainbow colors for the horns and wings because I thought they matched well, and then gave it one of the few remaining pieces of my dwindling collection of actual dichroic glass to keep as a treasure.

Crafted from polymer clay, gilding foil, alcohol ink, glass beads, and a piece of dichroic glass.
