Description This was the car I drove in high school. I had the Camaro but after wrecking it I needed a sacrificial ride. So this was it.
Brand new from the factory at sea level it was a 70 horsepower 1.7 four banger. By the time I got it I probably had about 45 horsepower.
It was a 1981 Dodge Omni with several body parts and interior bits frm a 1988 Dodge Omni and what we think MIGHT have been a Colt. The gear shifter made a circular motion as you drove down the road. The front passenger seat was held on with one mighty bolt and the doors sometimes latched, sometimes didn't, and sometimes changed its mind at random times making going around corners quite the experience for the passenger. The rear axle was bent, the right doors were caved in. The shocks in the back were purely there to make an appearance once in a while when I felt the need to pump the brakes to get the rear end bouncing until the rear tires began to leave the ground. It had no functional heater. The carb spacer was in three pieces. And at some point the cooling fan decided that reverse was the way to go and try to blow air forward going down the road making it overheat. One time I was going down the road with my friends in one of their cars behind me when they promptly ran over my entire exhaust system when it fell off... which we put back in eventually.
My favorite memory...
I was racing home. I was in this Omni and he was in his 1973 Toyota Celica and I was WINNING! I was probably cheating... because I mean... 70 horsepower NEW... and he was SO desperate to get around me that when we got to my street he cut the corner to pass me on the right. Cut the corner right through the yard of the house on that corner. However he didn't take into consideration that my little hatchback was really quite good on the corners and I simply TURNED RIGHT and before he knew it he was counting the creases in the dents on my right side... he missed, fortunately, not that anyone would have noticed the damage on either car at that point.
The other highlight was getting onto I-70 with a long winded turn in the on-ramp. I had a good roll going down the road and was determined not to slow down. the Omni was great in short low speed sharp corners... but holding a corner for a good eighth mile was a different matter. was in the back on the passenger side crawling OUT the window because we thought for sure I was going to roll it and go tumbleweeding into the oncoming lane. "WALL WALL WALL WALL!" he shouted as he tried to shift eh weight to the right to keep the wheels on the ground. When we cleared the guard barrier we still had that lateral movement going. "CAR CAR CAR CAR!" as I nearly blind sided a CRX and as we missed HER "WALL WALL WALL WALL!" as I bounced and skidded and slided across the whole westbound side of the interstate and nearly kissed the divider.
I see one of these once in a while and I think to myself... I'd still drive one of these. They're unreliable, slow, ugly, and worthless... and somehow those all seem to be what make them so loveable.
actually wound up with a Plymouth Horizon that was newer and well taken care of. At 90 horsepower he could bark the tires going into second. I wound up with another Omni later on myself.

My car is a bit of a beater as well. I want to put a bumper sticker on it that says: "Don't Laugh. It's paid for."

Oh, thought it was a mini jeep for a sec! Looking at it in google search, looks like it was a competitor to the golf...

I think they were related at least. The 1.8 was a VW engine. The Omni and Horizons were heavier, so they didn't perform as well as the GTI. But there was the Shelby GLH Omni that had tons of potential. People were getting those into the 12s which in the 80s was really cooking!

There actually was a GLH that I was trying to buy at one point. A cam and head swap ad throw on an intercooler and they got into the 12s.
