Description This is another of the guns my Grandfather made in his gunsmithing days. He made this one in 1971. Look at that wood, and this picture doesn't do justice to it. It's brilliant and deep. He did a lot of engraving on it as well. This one has a one of a kind custom barrel, designed to fire only... rolls of dimes.
In reality, rolls of dimes isn't a good idea. They lose their inertia so easily and tend to just sort of slap instead of connecting on the edge of the coin. But we DO have the tooling to cast lead balls for it as well! It is a flintlock, too. It cocks and fires as well as it did new. Nice, firm, and healthy sounding clicks.

I think that's what it's called. What breaks my heart is that when he passed away there was a massive chunk of it that got taken when locals raided the place. His whole place was mugged. We got this one and others only because he mad sure we got them before he passed. He knew everyone was going to be all over his house once word got out he died.

Yeah, we got a few other antiques and the gyrojet is a rare bird of a firearm as well.

Great for Zombie Attacks......until you have to reload it! Still, very cool gun!

Yeah, reloading is a bit lengthy. And it doesn't like wet weather. So if it's raining... I have a different blunderbuss for that.

My grandfather was a gunsmith when he was younger. He has a MASSIVE collection he's slowly giving to us piece by piece. Most of them are black powder, all of them are awesome. The tiger wood on this one is expensive, and he has this huge block of the stuff in raw form.

A gunsmith? I didn't know that was an actual profession/hobby! That's pretty incredible; you're lucky to have a grandpa like that.

Yeah, sadly I'll probably never get to meet him in person. He sends us things any time a family member visits him. (It's very hard for him to part with these things, but he knows it's safest. If he were to pass on there's a chance the house would be looted and his life's work stolen)
He's a rather ill tempered guy but for some reason he really likes me, says I'm intelligent. Lot of mechanics in my family, I wonder what traits makes him favor me... perhaps it's just my style and I'm real about what I know and don't know. I don't pretend I'm better than I am. I know he respects that.

Aww, so he lives far away? That's a shame.

I'd hate to have to pass on any of my things (and his are probably worth ten times more than anything I have!) so I see how he's a little reluctant on that.

Mechanics, eh? That's pretty cool! Heh, a lot of old people seem to be a bit on the moody/bad tempered side, but at least you're on his good side. (: I say, it sucks to be the non-favoured/forgotten one!

assuming it's safe, there's still the issue of devaluing. some consider mint unfired to be worth more, but others think it's more important to enjoy (and shoot) what you own.

kinda like unwrapping a gi joe or not...

HotRod-302 In reply to TreborNehoc [2010-11-24 22:16:32 +0000 UTC]

That's true, especially the safety issue. Lot of black powder guns can't handle the new stuff. But the barrel on this thing is heavy guage and the guy who will show me how to use it can inspect it.
Now THIS is a puppy I wont ever shoot or restore. [link]

I have a .50 cal black powder rifle, it's got some kick to it, about the same as a 2-3/4inch 12ga shooting #7 shot.

this one would be FUN to see shooting #7 shot

HotRod-302 In reply to CheshireCat8D [2010-10-06 02:31:31 +0000 UTC]

Personally, nothing yet on this one. We had plenty of ammo for the other black powder guns, but this one take BALLS to fire (haha!) We didn't get the molds (and the method t melt the lead) until not long ago. Even though it's black powder I imagine this one will have a surprising kick.

I still say use a roll of dimes. Just before squeezing the trigger, say "your change, sir".
