Half a decade later and this story is still touching to me beyond words. I wonder what became of the kid.

You should be friends with him! It seems like the obvious conclusion to this story.

I can't see why anyone should find "disabilities" a sensitive subject. I personaly find it incredibly intresting. People only fear them because they sometimes have a very different way of thinking.

Hahah that blue guy was like me when I was a child ^.^ yeah I had to deal with the same troubles he had, but eventually I learned to keep myself to myself socially, this is a lovely comic that says a lot for people like us, thanks for spreading the word ^^

You are very welcome, and I'm glad you enjoyed the comic. ^^
I hope more people out there realize that it's alright to be kind back to others, it's not weird at all.

"and people wonder why making friends is so hard... it's because we're too afraid to talk to each other". this, honey, is the best sentence of the year. i loved the story, brings up an actually pretty serious topic and makes me wish to go to preschool again, we didn't have those kinds of problems back then D:

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with him. But that whole "Has society become apathetic" thing that you brought up might be a little bit more extreme than the situation is, but that's just what I think.

I say hi to any adult that I see and wave at kids in buses as they pass me. I usually don't get waved back at but I don't care.
I also wave at any person in a firetruck that isn't lit up or any helpful car like that, as long as the lights aren't on.
I also hug every single on of my friends at least five times a day, no matter what. I've never had a true-true friend until sixth grade and that was when I poked my stand partner's eye own with a violin bow and had to take her to the nurse. After that, I've gotten a few more friends and I'm starting to open up around my school, I've always been quiet and only spoke to my notebook.
There are a few kids with autism in my school and I smile and answer any question they have, they always smile at me. I even have a friend that notices when it gets awkward in the room and blurts out something completely random and makes us all laugh.
You are an amazing person right now, and thank you for making this.

Well you keep waving, because you're awesome for doing that ;w;
I'm a bit too awkward for hugs, unfortunately. v__v It seems that I find it so much easier to write out my thoughts than to say them, too. I'm trying to come out of my shell but it's a little hard sometimes.
You sound like a lovely person TTwTT I wish there more nice people around my school.
Aw, thank you ^///^

And if I see him, I'll definitely say hello. ^^

MoogleSam [2013-11-20 07:49:43 +0000 UTC]
Well, I think in general it seems odd to say hello to people you don't know in most instances where you are just passing by because, it is usually an indicator of where your friendship/acquaintanceship is standing.
When you are happy with them you'll give a smile, a wave or maybe a hello to them, you might even ask how they are but when you're not or you're distracted, you might give a frown or appear dazed which will show them something isn't quite right.
So of course many people will ignore him or feel confused, they don't actually know him or anything about him, so they have no idea how to react to this unexplainable friendliness when they are just passing by and they have nothing they can say to him past a 'hello' back.
If it was in a classroom, that'd be different. He'd be saying hello to people that are in a fixed location for a period of time that likely share some interest in the subject they both happen to be taking which does give them a topic to actually talk about. When there is an actual topic to go on, it is much easier for people to start a conversation with a stranger and form a friendship.
That's why in classes and at work, people find it easy to make friends, they have fixed topics they can start a conversation about but, outside of such places, it is very difficult. We don't know what the people around us like, unless they are blatantly wearing it on a shirt, so we have no topic to start on unless they are completely alone, in which case, we can comment on them being alone but risk coming off as flirty or stupid if they aren't actually alone and were just waiting for someone to show up.
