Description Traditional collage: 5 x 5" bristol board

I've been having a fairly desultory conversation with *weedlace on digital vs traditional collage; the joys of tactile layers (and scraping gel medium off your fingers in the middle of the night) vs the delights of the undo button.

So, as an experiment, I made two fast versions (trad and dig) of the same concept / theme / composition. This is the traditional version.

Digital art can be well done, but I personally prefer the process of producing a physical object. Something that has a tactility and smell and weight of its own, caused as much by the media as the artist's interaction with it. Both are lovely pieces though.

*in love* This is beautiful! I too really love the experience of traditional art. It has more physical presence because more matter is in fact present: the paint layers, wax, paper, etc. that is something a digital print can never duplicate.

Though I do appreciate digital, because I do graphic design and I know the kind of work involved.

I think that the things that are important in traditional work are just as important in digital. The methods used to achieve them are simply different. I appreciate texture, color, depth, many layers and composition, all of which can be successful in digital art, but I think Digital art takes more time!

Ah, that says it all. "Physical presence". Digital collage has always felt "thin" to me. I enjoy the process enormously, but the product never has as much satisfying tactile energy about it.

I love that you did this experiment. And while I love both versions and I love to do both ways, I must say that the traditional is the nicer of the two version. And more fun IMHO. Nothing can take the place of the tactile.

I love the depth to this. But I hate to give up on anything, so I will probably continue to plod along with the digital efforts. And maybe it will click, so to speak, someday. Doing this sort of experiment was a great idea, and really helpful to me, in terms of putting things into proper context. So thanx!

I'm with you on the traditional angle - I love getting my hands mucky. And then stroking everything afterwards.

I'm such a perve. LOL
