The prehistoric sperm whale Livyatan was one of the most spectacular sea monsters of all times. It lived during the Miocene and Pliocene, and would've coexisted and probably competed with the famous megalodon.
Unlike today's sperm whales which have teeth only on the lower jaw and feed mostly on soft bodied cephalopods, Livyatan had a quick and powerful bite and massive upper and lower teeth; it is believed to have preyed on other whales and large marine animals, surely being one of the ultimate predators of its time.

It seems like an eternity ago but I was the first to post a Livyatan doodle to Deviantart after it was first announced!

Night and day, wind and storm, tide and earthquake, impeded man no longer. He had harnessed Leviathan. All the old literature, with its praise of Nature, and its fear of Nature, rang false as the prattle of a child.

Splendid work! I love how the scratches on the whale's skin makes it look battle hared as expected of the king of marco-raptorial sperm whales. Also it's interesting that your restored it off of a regular sperm whale instead of orcas, which have a more closer diet and lifestyle than a sperm whale.

Thanks! Seems everybody draws it more orca-like these days, I wanted to go back to the original idea!

No problems! Also that's a fair point. I think a mix of then with some false killer whale would be interesting for a reconstruction.

Amazing work. I think early whaling would have been a far greater challenged if they existed into modern times.

Thanks!  Whoa...heading out to whale watch Livyatans?  You'll definitely need bigger boats.  Armor wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

I was thinking, whale watching for regular whales and suddenly a Livyatan showing up... you'd know you're in for a show!

HodariNundu In reply to Beto1207 [2020-04-12 19:56:06 +0000 UTC]

Even today's Sperm Whales are vicious predators. One of their likely meals is the Giant Squid.

It's interesting how two of the largest predators that swam Earth's oceans lived just 5 million years ago, and yet they outsized most marine reptiles, both in length and by a long shot in mass.
