Allodesmus fue un pinípedo prehistórico que tenía características tanto de foca como león marino, así como otras propias tales como aletas frontales bastante largas y ojos enormes que le permitían cazar en aguas profundas o turbias. Vivió durante el Mioceno y había varias especies de diferentes tamaños; la más grande aparentemente era comparable al elefante marino del norte actual, siendo por tanto uno de los mayores pinípedos del registro fósil.

Allodesmus was a prehistoric pinniped that combined traits of both seals and sea lions, as well as unique traits such as long, powerful foreflippers and large eyes to better hunt in deep waters. It lived during the Miocene and included several species of different sizes; the biggest were apparently in the same size range as today's northern elephant seals, being thus one of the largest pinnipeds in the fossil record.
