Description Loosely based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's Song of Hiawatha. Actually the fish should be a sturgeon but I've decided to draw a pike (which is from Chukchi folklore).

Maybe it wasn't such a smart idea to fish here at all

On the other hand, the jaws are so big he could easily avoid the teeth at all, maybe his plan is to kill it xenomorph style

Well, if he can hold his breath for that long The encounter in the Song of Hiawatha was a stereotypical mythological 'fight a monster from within' case.

H. W. Longfellow studied Native North American folklore before he wrote "Hiawatha" as far as I know so it's no coincidence)) The story itself is known in many mythos in different variants.

By the way, I could say that Narive Americal culture (mostly Northern American) is rather popular here in Russia. There were quite alot of adventure movies and books on this topic in the USSR and many grew up with them.

Giant pike myths aren't that rare I guess. We have several variations of this myth in Russia. There are similar myths in North America.

Giant Pike is a standard myth in Sweden too!

No surprise since it's long-time common knowledge that pikes are apex predators and fierce ones at that. Imagine one as large as an orca and you have a perfect mythical monster.

In Poland there is one too.

That's interesting to know! I suppose it's universal when a man observes a pike, especially on it's ruthless, fast hunting habits and thinks "What if this is ten meters long?"Β

KingsOfEvilArt In reply to Hoch-Spannung [2017-12-19 19:53:06 +0000 UTC]

the Polish variant of the legend is in particularly interesting that when the monster is finally killed the fishermen find within his belly various historical artifacts devoured by the beast during his long life.

To continue the way of thought from the previous post: "If I've happened to find a jewel in a usual pike than how much I could find in a ten meter one?"
