I believe there is a refernce sheet on DA specifically for bff hands (like holding hands, knuckle bumps, pinkie swears etc.) if not then I know for sure it's on tumblr.

Truly a brilliant practice, I may need to consider doing this. I was planning to start doing a "100 object challenge myself", but I have yet to start since I want to be able to draw a human first. Although I would like to ask if you went to any art class or merely did self practices most of the time?

Maybe 1 or 2 of them I attempted from imagination at the very beginning, especially after looking at a few hand tips/tutorials floating around on dA, Tumblr, and the Internet, but the majority and whole time I used photographs of hands, my own hands, and while going outside with friends, the hands of others as reference. I learned much more that way than through copying the personal rules other artists found for themselves~
If there's one thing I could say, it's that the first "page" was fighting against personal bad habits as an artist. From then on, as I acknowledge what mistakes I keep making and try to correct/avoid them, I internalize the knowledge the more I draw~ Don't be afraid of mistakes! There will ALWAYS be another hand for you to draw and learn from!

My hand-drawing skills UBER sucked before doing this! Now it's less so, thanks to practice!

Well the first hand on here alone is lots better than one of mine, mine look like the ones I drew in Kindergarten... That's really discouraging.

Now i'm gonna try.
Also, sorry to hear about your grandfather, he must've been a good man if it means you're willing to mourn him for 50 days.

Drawing hands can be very hard. I suck at them, and to be honest, I never even thought about doing this!
Maybe one day I'll do this, because from the looks of it, this has helped you out....A LOT.

Tell me if this is a stupid question but, were any of these referenced from photos or were you lucky enough to find a life drawing class in the area and did the hand studies on the side?

Hnilmik In reply to Malbenthomas [2012-06-27 19:26:33 +0000 UTC]
Mostly from photos and my own hands, but for page 2, I was out and about with friends and drew their hands and the hands of strangers. Life and photograph references, yo!

Hnilmik In reply to aznriot [2012-06-27 18:22:49 +0000 UTC]
I personally HIGHLY advise against using this as reference. These are my notes, complete with my own mistakes, and there's also an image distortion farking up how the forms and lines REALLY look.
Just reference from life and a lot of photographs like I did. You'll learn more that way.
